Editorial Reviews:

Description
Our VHS video is 67 minutes long and consists of teaching the five basic commands: sit, stay, come, down, and heel as well as a number of safety drills and the advanced recall. We start with an introduction by Mr. Art Linkletter, and then on to Mr. Blackwells dogs. Maray uses many different breeds in the video and her main intent is to teach the dog owners how to train their own dogs at home. She uses humor, discipline, and much love for the animals in order to gain their respect. Her genuine love for each dog is displayed in her actions and it is quite prevalent throughout the tape. Maray has appeared on many cable TV shows as well as Los Angeles in the Morning with Stephanie Edwards.

This production has won two important awards for its instructional incisiveness and simplicity. These awards were the Best Special Interest Video from the Houston Film Festival and The Award of Excellence, presented by the Film Advisory Board, the only instructional video to be so honored.

5 out of 5 stars JUST WHAT I NEEDED AT THE TIME I NEEDED IT!   October 9, 2000

I adopted my dog Sandy from the local Humane Society. Two years old and terribly abused. She avoided me as much as possible and I needed help. I obtained Maray Ayres' video and followed the instructions given. Today Sandy is a lovable, well trained dog. I was fortunate enough to meet Ms. Ayres, and found her to be not only very attractive but extremely loving in her handling of the dogs being trained. She pointed out that in the video she does not advocate general use of the choke collar, in fact, I observed that she handles dogs very gently, but firmly. I absolutely recommend this video to all dog owners.

I have watched several dog training videos, and this one was terrible.

As mentioned in a previous review, it was painfully obvious that the dogs were already trained before the camera started rolling. Dogs were sitting before the command was given, etc etc etc. It would have been worthwhile if she was actually using untrained dogs to demonstrate her techniques.

Also, she is very annoying to listen to. She talks to the dogs in the squeaky childlike voice that irritated me so much it took me several viewings to watch the entire video.

She was also very obvious about name dropping. She didn't just use any dogs, she made a point of saying "We are at Richard Dreyfus' house and this is his dog...We are at Art Lincletter's house and this is his dog".

Finally, she uses the classic negative reinforcement technique (choke collar) method for training. I have started using a positive reinforcement program with my dog that has been very beneficial. I suggest a book called Dogwise by John Fisher of another of his books, Think Dog, and Owners Guide to Dog Psychology. These books start with the basics of how dogs think, and how you can use positive reinforcement to train your dogs as effectively.

All in all, I did not like this video.

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative   July 1, 2000

I purchased this video for my Nephew so he would learn how to train his new dog. He followed the instructions, and now he has a well trained and behaved pet.

I read one review that was not very flattering. I think the reviewer forgot the video was made to teach people how to train their pets. Its not a video on dog tricks.

5 out of 5 stars It worked for me!   June 22, 2000

We have a very willful, active golden retriever puppy that we wanted to have obedience training without breaking her spirit. Maray's KISS Method was the perfect answer. The lessons were simple, effective and we immediately saw results. Ms. Ayres provided insight into how a dog learns and responds to human interaction, which has helped us immensely in dealing with our dog. It was also helpful to watch Maray work with dogs that had some previous training-it gave us an excellent model for our own lessons. We didn't buy the video as proof that Ms. Ayres could train dogs, but to learn how to work with our own dog. In addition, we loved the safety tips and drills included with the video. Not only do we feel better equipped to handle anything with our dog, but also we have learned how to do it without stressing out the dog or ourselves!
