here is a wonderful handbook for the dog owner who wants to learn about dog training. it follows an eight week group obedience class by given by the trainer, c.w. meisterfeld. i am a professional dog trainer and my classes are modeled after this very book! as a result, i have achieved great success with my programs and my classes are always very well attended with very few dropouts!! i recommend this book for any serious dog trainer, or for the average home trainer. don't miss this one!!

This book is the best dog training book I have read. The 8 week training course taught me how to train my dog without pain, and explains common problems on the way though each step - I learnt training a dog takes time and patience. In the past I was told force or dominance was the only way to train, I found after reading Jelly Bean Verses Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde the dominate training and yelling was most likely what was causing the problems. My dogs no long fight or bite which is great. This book and Dr Meisterfeld's other books (Jelly Bean Verses Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Dog Whisper, and Dog and Human Behavior) has not only changed my dogs life but my life too. I am so thankful for Dr Meisterfeld's information and knowledge of the domestic dog. When I put his philosophy in to practice, my dogs problems faded away. Well worth reading.

Having previously read Mr. Meisterfeld's JELLY BEAN VS. DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE in which he kept referring to his philosophy of psychological dog training with trust and repect, I bought the book hoping to find the answers I didn't get in that book. I won't say it wasn't interesting and if you're looking for an informative, positive way to train your dog in the basics, beginning with sit, etc., this is the book. However, it reads like the transcript of his 8-week training session, with narrative questions from his students.
Fortunately, my dog is already trained in advanced obedience so I was disappointed that that was all the information and that problem-solving is not addressed. At the end of the book are plenty of testimonials from Meisterfeld converts but they're always vague about how they solved their individual problems. At the back of the book you'll find plenty of opportunity to buy additional books, videos or to enroll in his apprenticeship program to become a trainer. I agree with his philosophy, at least I think I do. I'm just not sure what it is and I don't care to have to buy another book to find out.

5 out of 5 stars Meisterfeld is the Einstein of dog training   April 6, 2003

Five years ago this book totally changed our dog's life---and ours, for the better. The book does take some study, notetaking, researching and retraining of your own attitudes and behavior, but once understood, it is the most effective and compassionate, mutual respect training system I have ever tried. It can save problem dogs. In my book, Meisterfeld is the Einstein of dog training. Now, in our travels, we often meet people struggling with problem dogs (straining-at-the-leash, inattentive, disobedient), and with their permission, after a 5-15 minute training session, they are heeling and paying attention. The owner's reactions are of amazement and disbelief and they usually call their spouses over to witness the new behavior for themselves. Meisterfeld stresses that both owners AND their dogs need to be trained. When talking to people with problem dogs, we always recommend Meisterfeld. Meisterfeld gives hope and solutions to owners of "problem" dogs (actually, untrained owners are the source of problems). Once you witness the effectiveness of his system it would be impossible to criticize his principles and logic.

This book is a verbatim regurgitation of some dog training classes conducted by the author. NO SOLUTIONS are put forward from which readers can learn or apply to their own situations...

Unsure about the credentials of the author, as sometimes he claims to be a "Dr.", other times not, and certainly no reference as to what his real training (if any) is. No documentation or curriculum vitae is available despite searching.
