Amazon.com Review
The monks of New Skete have been breeding and training dogs at their New York monastery for more than 20 years. Their philosophy of raising dogs accentuates the essential human-canine bond, whereby owners must learn to understand a dog's instincts, needs, and behavior. Understanding a dog, the monks say, is the key to successfully training him. They first published this philosophy in their 1978 classic guide How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend. Now the monks concentrate on the first three months of a puppy's life in The Art of Raising a Puppy.

The book observes a litter of monastery puppies from birth to 12 weeks. Tender photographs and dialogue reflect these precious first few weeks of life. Even at this time, the human-canine link is vital; the monks stress the importance of gentle touch to help forge this connection. Basic puppy training techniques are explored and executed, all of which puppy owners should find easy to implement. Virtually all types of dog problems and dog training are examined in the book, always in compassionate and easily comprehensible language. The monks also look well beyond surface training techniques to analyze the roots of dogs' problems and explain how training can help. Owners are taught how to gently assert dominance over their dog, which will make for a long-lasting and fulfilling relationship. Beautiful black-and-white photographs of monastery puppies will pull at every heartstring.

Product Description
he Monks of New Skete have been involved in every facet of dog care for over 25 years: breeding and raising German Shepherds, training dogs of all breeds, and counseling dog owners on the many aspects of life with their dogs. What sets their program apart is the monks' compassion, respect, affection, and understanding of canine behavior and how they incorporate that into their training.

From the decision to adopt a pup through the process of finding a dog breeder, preparing for your pup's arrival, succeeding at house-training and preliminary obedience exercises, and building the foundations of training, they offer clear guidelines for raising a puppy and establishing a lasting, loving relationship. This is an essential source of wisdom, information, and inspiration for anyone who has a puppy or is considering bringing one home.

5 out of 5 stars Great Help   December 28, 2008

This book showed me what I had done wrong in the past. I let my dog, a German Shepherd be the boss and she got away with murder. If you see the movie Marley and Me, my Meghan could have been Marley. I spoiled her because I loved her.

After Meghan died, I was very lost. Finally after 1 1/2 years of lonliness, I got another German Shepherd and named hime Moose. He came from GS Rescue and was 8 mo old. He is now 1 year and 87 lbs.

Because a friend referred this book to me, I got started off right. It tells how you can lovingly show your dog who is boss and teach him the correct way to act. It was a big help to me. Moose is a big boy but very well behaved and gentle. Great Book!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, comprehensive best book for puppy training   December 15, 2008

Okay so this is I dont even know what number of book I've read thus far for puppy training. I've read the dog whisperer (not Cesar Milan), two of Cesar Milans book, The other side of the leash, ASPCA dog training, etc, etc you get the idea.

This is the best book I've read thus far and if you only have the money for one puppy book get this one.

Why I like it. I have a high strung lab. Sorry positive reinforcement and replacement just don't work for the jumping, nipping etc. This book taught me how to handle the nipping and in two days my puppies nipping was improved 98%. That's a big bravo in my book. Housetraining schedule, crate training, temperament testing for puppies, basic dog obedience. How to socialize your dog, collars for training. I give this book five stars and is a must have for puppy raising. I also like their other book by the way but this is the best for puppies.

I love this book! I think the monks find a way to simplify and teach everyone exactly how to read and train their dogs. They offer kind and effective methods that really work! I have now bought this book as a gift to share the knowledge with others who are considering getting a puppy. It was invaluable to me.

This is a must read for anyone considering the adoption of a puppy. It sets realistic expectations and responsibilities for the family and provides well-accepted and proven practices to produce a companion animal that will bring you and your family happiness and joy for many years.
