Learn to speak "dog" July 8, 2005 Wolf (Florida) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I've had dogs all my life and am pretty good at reading the body language with which I'm familiar. With the combination of this book and the VHS tape, I can communicate with dogs in way that's never been possible. Not only do I understand better when they're stressed but I can tell them, "It's ok. You can relax" in language they understand. My dog, who's afraid of thunderstorms, actually went to sleep near the end of one. Even his demeanor toward me has changed. It's like he's telling me, "Oh finally! You get it." This information has dramatically changed the way I communicate with another species more than anything I've ever read or seen.
Not that impressed April 12, 2005 chrysynthia2 (OH) 10 out of 15 found this review helpful
After reading all of the rave reviews I think my expectations were too high. I was just not that impressed with this book and found the advise to be a bit vague; I would recommend reading any book by Patricia McConnell before this one. On a side note the author (and editor in not catching this) really irked me with her inability to spell the word losing correctly, it was mispelled at least 2x's; the correct spelling of losing is NOT "loosing" and loose and lose do NOT mean the same thing.
On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals February 4, 2005 Jennifer E (Waynesville, MO USA) 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
Wow! Talk about great things coming in small packages. Its a small book and a quick read, packed full of what all dog owners should know. I have 3 dogs. The newest member, a 1 year old australian shephard mix, is hyper and "bothers" my older dog. I began watching them with my new found Knowledge of calming signals, and realized that my older dog wasnt actually bothered, he was trying to soothe the hyper puppy. I began to use the calming signals myself with the puppy and he stopped jumping and running around like a maniac and actually began to pay attention to me. Im truely amazed. Thank you Turid Rugaas for all your work and for sharing it with others. This is a book all dog owners should read!!
Revolutionary! January 29, 2005 Christine M. Sorgen (PA, USA) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
I am part of a 4 dog-pack and Turid Rugaas' book has made life so much smoother! I share a deep bond with my dogs now. Not the typical "Master/Pet" dynamic that happens to most American dogs. It has also made it possible for me to deal successfully with strange dogs when I am alone or walking my own dogs on a leash. I tested the information in this book at a wolf sanctuary (through the wire fence). The man who ran the sanctuary said he had never seen them accept a new human as quickly as they had me. They came right to the fence and greeted me using the behaviors outlined in the book. They understood my body language and answered me with the same language. I showed "submission" to an "alpha" male he invited me to interact! It is invaluable to anyone who loves their dog! I wish every person in America had to read this book! It is worth its weight in gold!
a diamond in the "ruff" January 17, 2005 E. Lane (Chicago, IL USA) 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
As a publishing professional, this book truly is (as others have noted) very simple and unassuming--a bit rough around the edges, even. But the minute I started reading, I realized that the information presented in it is TERRIFIC. No fluff, no filler, no pompous Ivory Tower types to be found in these scant pages. Literally within the first three pages of chapter 1, I recognized my own dog's behaviors and knew that the rest of the book would prove invaluable over my dog's life. It's like finally having "x-ray vision" glasses into a dog's mind, and the secret decoder ring, too! I look forward to reading the rest of the book. I hope someday the book's sales warrant reissuing it with a little polishing-up to appeal to more people!
