Meat and Fluff August 30, 2007 chip carman (Nevada City, CA USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
If I'd previewed the book first, I would not have purchased it. Personally I don't like all the name dropping (hey, but it sells books...). However, the meat finally starts in chapter 8. Could be more concise, but the book has memorable stories, and offers good advice if your an advocate of training dogs with treats. Some might say, "I believe that PRAISE and LOVE, not food, are a dog's treat and motivation. Your dog's focus and attention is then on you. Everyone is happier and healthier...." -- Local dog Obedience school in our area Persoanlly, I've found that after all the obedience training, and reading many books, our expierience as typical dog owners is that treats are very powerful -- tidbits on walks, tidbits in the dinner bowl, tidbit when someone visits, an anticipated treat for after we finish our dinner, etc. Treats, in reason, with PRAISE and LOVE; it's like a magic elixir!
A nice companion for your four-legged friends August 26, 2007 Bevy McM (San Francisco, CA United States) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you love your dog, you owe it to your pet as well as yourself to buy this book, use it, and then enjoy your friend much more than you thought possible. She incorporates positive behavior reinforcement, lots of praise, and smiling while you talk, as well as some non-confrontational ways to reduce bad behavior, like jumping. As with all training, consistency is really the key here. I am also a fan of Cesar Millan's "The Dog Whisperer," although some of his methods seem a bit harsh for the sweeter-tempered dogs. I do believe his approach (that you must be leader of the pack) is correct, because dogs are inherantly pack animals and need to be taught to respect their leader. I think a judicious combination of both would be a good bet.

There are better books about dog training than this one - it's all celebrity fluff and nothing new. Dog Training for Dummies is better.
The Loved Dog August 9, 2007 Christine L. Brihn 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is the best book ever written about dogs. I have tried several behaviors and they work. I have a pug-very smart dog. He has responded very well to all of Tamer's suggestions. I have purchased copies to give as gifts. Great Great Book.
Best Yet Training Book for Dogs August 9, 2007 Paula D. Ashton (Toledo, OH USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have owned and trained dogs for many years and I have most of the top training manuals. "The Loved Dog" is the best thing to come out in years. Tamar really understands dogs and how their minds work. I tried some of her methods on my own dogs with great success. I highly recommend this book to all dog owners.
