5 out of 5 stars A wonderful approach to understanding how your dog thinks   July 1, 1998

If more people read this book and took the time to understand dog psychology, instead of operating from their own point of view, I am sure there would be more happy pets and fewer frustrated owners. People often have the right intentions, but lack the information on correct methods to achieve successful results. I have owned quite a few dogs, and made my share of mistakes. Thanks to this book I am having some good results with a new pup. It is to the owner's advantage to learn "dog talk", he is doing HIS best to learn "human". Also, I have found a general understanding of your dog's particular breed characteristics help in selecting the right dog for you. Some dogs are more difficult to raise, and not everyone has the patience, time or space to raise certain breeds, which means the dogs end up in "rescue". This book is excellent in helping to spot potential problems when purchasing your puppy. Heredity plays a big role in personality, trainability and in future results. This book is so well-written, well-illustrated, I would highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars A must-have book for all dog owners!   June 6, 1998

This is an excellent, very comprehensive book that guides you through the responsibilities of dog ownership. The easy to read text and simple step by step instructions on how to train your dog make this book one of the best I've ever read. It is useful if you are starting out with a puppy or if you have an adult dog that needs retraining. It discusses common problems dogs may have as well as useful advice on how to housetrain and socialize your dog.I recommend it highly to all dog owners!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent methods that proved successful immediately   April 16, 1998

After reading and using the techniques in this book, I had my three year old dog healing like a champ within one week. (I tried techniques from several other books, but to no avail.) This book is very well written, easy to understand, and well illustrated. I was at the end of my patience trying to get my 'wild' dog under control. Thanks to the methods in this book, my 'wild' dog is progressing very nicely!

5 out of 5 stars Good Show, Great Book   July 8, 1997

I have been watching Kilcommons on his weekly cable show "Pet News" (FoxNews Network) for months. And I admit, I used to think I was a real idiot. I thought I could never have a dog because I'd never live a sane life. The dog would take over, chewing everything in sight, barking at everyone it sees, and eventually I'd get evicted. But somewhere deep down I knew I wanted a puppy. I just knew that I would know when I saw the perfect pup. Brian Kilcommons' book proved me right. He showed me how to select the perfect pup for me and he was even kind enough to include instructions in how to raise her! If only babies came with such wonderful books... Good Owners, Great Dogs is great because it doesn't beat around the bush. Kilcommons tells me how and why to train my dog. I bought the book along with my first puppy, and things are wonderful. Having a puppy changed my life and Good Owners, Great Dogs is giving me the education I need. Frankly, if you haven't done your homework on how to raise your dog, THIS BOOK IS REQUIRED READING. Criticisms: I felt like Kilcommons tried to incorporate too many tips into such a short book. It's almost too broad at times, and I found myself with a few unanswered questions.
