5 out of 5 stars Wished I'd written it   July 13, 2003

I hate to say it, but I wished I'd written this book. I'm a trainer in Los Angeles and this book summarizes in a clear way not only what an owner needs to do in order to prepare their dog for a baby, but what they need to do to build a positive and mutually rewarding relationship with their child.

Of course, though I wished I'd written this book, now there's clearly no need to do it since there's little if anything left to add to this title.

I highly recommend it to you and will recommend it to my training clients.

I read Mr. Wombacher's book after hearing him speak on a local radio program in my town.

I was immediately able to identify problem areas in my relationship with my dog and fix them.

When I encountered a few things with my dog that I wasn't sure how to handle even with the good instructions in the book I called Mr. Wombacher and he was kind enough to spend twenty minutes on the phone with me free of charge to help me with my issue. He took great care to address my concerns and showed great generosity of spirit in dealing with me.

I highly recommend his book and whatever services he might have to offer.

This book seems to be a direct knockoff of Brian Kilcommons' book on the same subject. The only differences I really noted were splashy demonstration pictures & cute illustrations that supplemented the text. It was a waste of my money & don't recommend it if you are buying the Kilcommon's book on the same topic. It may be ok for someone w/no dog training experience, but to be honest, I'd purchase a training/obedience book from Kilcommons, along with Kilcommon's "Childproofing your Dog" book, if I were a sheer novice. (And sign up for some basic obedience classes in your area) I'm not convinced that Wombacher is a trainer from the contents of this book. And I have spent an extended amount of time in advanced obedience training w/my dog, as well as agility work and basic obedience w/2 other dogs.

5 out of 5 stars It worked for me   April 30, 2003

I was inspired to write this review after using Mike Wombacher's training services in San Francisco. He was referred to me by numerous sources and I used this book as a reference throughout our training process.

My wife was six months pregnant and we were concerned about a number of problem behaviors in our five year old lab mix. He had issues of aggression, separation anxiety and a number of other things and we thought for sure that we'd have to find him another home with a baby on the way - not an easy thing to do for a dog like him.

Mike helped us resolve all our areas of concern using precisely the methods described in his book. It was a life saver for us. It's concise, well-written, easy to use and filled with stuff that works. If you're having a baby and have concerns about your dog do yourself a favor and buy this book. Your dog will thank you for it.

5 out of 5 stars I give it to my students   April 29, 2003

I'm a Lamaze teacher in St. Louis and first heard about this book on a radio interview with the author. Interested, I ordered a copy, read it and ran it by a dog trainer friend, who agreed that the information is pertinent, well organized and easy to use.

Since then I've been referring it to all my students who have dogs and have received tremendously positive feedback from them all. They tell me that the book caused them to think of things they hadn't thought of previously regarding their dog and their soon to arrive baby. In every case, where they had a problem, the book offered a solution and in one case it even helped an owner to assess the temperament of her dog in order to determine whether he would be appropriate with a child in the house.

All in all, this is one of the best little finds I've made and it's been a pleasure to share it with others. So if you've got a dog with a baby on the way, don't pass up this book. It's the best "money" you're likely to spend before your little one arrives.
