I bought this book to train my puppy and did everything Marlo said. My puppy was house-broken within weeks. She loves her crate. She responds to about 30 commands. And, she is very loving and respectful. Everyone asks me how I trained her so well. I highly recommend this book for first time dog owners, and seasoned owners alike. Marlo's methods are simple and effective. Try them. They really work.

Having been in Shelby's puppy classes before, I was excited to finally purchase her book. Shelby's expertise is an invaluble tool for any dog owner. This book gives you an essential understanding of dog behaviour. For each element of training, from the basics of house-breaking, to resolving behavioural problems, you get not only the how, but the why. Anyone can tell you how to get a dog to do something, but Shelby gives you insight into dog behaviour which gives you a greater understanding of your dog and gives you the tools necessary to really develop and evolve a great working relationship with your canine companion.

I've spoken to many different kinds of dog owners and trainers that train both police, companion, and show dogs, and just about 98% or more of the advice they gave me, I had already read in this book. I believe that Shelby Marlo does a fantastic job of explaining training basics that many dog training books don't even touch on (or at least the dog training books that I've read from my local libraries.) A lot of people that reviewed this book said something negative about her comments on pinch collars but I believe that they can sometimes be helpful if gentle leaders and other training methods don't work (as long as you are taught how to use them by professionals) so you won't hurt your dog. Some dogs are just really stubborn and have very bad temperments (especially if they aren't trained as a puppy and others, just can't wear gentle leaders b/c of their facial structure (most dogs CAN wear and tolerate them but a few breeds can't) and other dogs just don't respond to gentle leaders, reward training or similar methods; so it just depends on the dog's temperment and it's training history. Shelby Marlo doesn't use pinch collar training methods in this book though, and that's why I like it; she teaches you how to train your dog using commands, rewards/treats, and a crate. I think that this is a Great Book and that New dog owners should read it and follow it's advice BEFORE wasting money on a basic puppy training class that will teach you a lot less. If you want to learn how to master basics and a lot more, just read this book- you might want to take notes or break out a highlighter; the information is that useful ^_^ Good luck with Training and have fun!_GSD owner

Granted there is some good information in this book, you really have to dig to find it. Not a good book to read if you are just learning about training dogs because you won't know what is the good stuff and what things to avoid. For instance, she believes that it is ok to use pinch collars as long as you have a trainer working with you. I believe that when you are training an animal (be it a dog, horse, cat, whatever...) the only way you are going to get real consistant results is not through pain. That breaks the trust that you are trying to gain with the animal. If you want to get something about training get a book on dog behavior (so you know how to communicate with your dog) and a book on clicker training (such as Clicker Training for Obedience by Morgan Spector).
