I have owned pitbulls for the last 27 years and don't intended to ever own another breed of dog. having read this incredibly educational masterpiece three times since i bought it a few months ago, i understand my dogs so much better and love them even more. I would encourage anyone that owns any kind of dog to read it at least more than once. I know I will read it again several times. Thank you very much dear Patricia McConnell
Loved it ! Loved it! Loved it! November 1, 2006 N. Ferguson (Ohio) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Every dog owner should read this book! I'm an experienced dog owner who just adopted a 4 year old rescue dog. I decided to go "back to school" and look for some new books to help me train my new dog. I bought three books by Patricia McConnell: 1) How to be the Leader of the Pack...And have your dog love you for it (a WONDERFUL short primer on having happy relationships with dogs) 2) The Other End of the Leash (a full-length book about communicating with dogs-- GREAT!!!!) 3) Family Dog Training (a very readable, clear, wonderful book on training dogs gently-- it works!! My dog is learning so quickly!) This is the best author I have ever found for people who want to learn how to train their dogs through understanding effective canine-human communication. Read her books and you will never again try to train your dog through "leash pops", etc.. What a breath of fresh air! Finally, training methods you can feel really, really good about. Fun for dogs and humans. I can't say enough good things about Patricia McConnell!
Insights on Nonverbal Communication with Your Dog October 19, 2006 James D. DeWitt (Fairbanks, AK United States) 57 out of 57 found this review helpful
Patricia McConnell is probably best known the co-host of Wisconsin Public Radio's "Calling All Pets." But she has also written a series of books. "The Other End of the Leash" is probably the best known. As an ethologist specializing in canines, she brings a different, professional viewpoint to people's relations with their pets. Her point is simple: dogs and humans both communicate, but because we are very different animals, we often misread each other's nonverbal cues. The nonverbal greeting signals for a human, for example, are threat signals to a dog. What she does is help dog owners learn to send the nonverbal messages they intend to their dogs, to speak to dogs in the nonverbal dialog that dogs understand. It's an important, even critical point, in dealing with dogs. Mixed signals, unintended signals and the wrong signals can confuse a dog, and even trigger hostility and attack. It's especially important for stranger dogs. Her points can help you a lot in dealing with dogs. But what this book isn't is a primer on training your dog. It's a guide to dog behavior, it's not a book on how to train your dog. Make no mistake, Dr. McConnell's insights can be of immense help to you in training and dealing with dogs. A dog that is relaxed and comfortable, that isn't getting the wrong nonverbal signals, is easier to train. But it's not a training book. As other reviewers have noted, sometimes Dr. McConnell repeats her points a few extra times. Perhaps it is a consequence of dealing with difficult dogs and difficult dog owners for a long time. But that's a minor annoyance. This is a valuable useful book to anyone with a difficult dog or any dog owner who wants to understand his or her dog better. Recommended.
Great insight on dogs October 16, 2006 Itiba 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really like this book. She gives many descriptions on her dogs and their various personalities. She discusses the differences between humans and dogs also. I enjoyed the stories regarding the dogs that she had and their interactions towards each other. It helped me to understand the beauty of animals and that they are not stupid at all!
Superb! October 8, 2006 Ellen (CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is an ideal book for helping we humans to understand the mind and body language of dogs. As a bonus, McConnell is an engaging, funny writer.
