5 out of 5 stars Can a book have a profound effect on your life ? Yup...   June 9, 1998

My wife and I never dreamed we could love a dog so much. This book was an extremely important part of getting to that point. We now firmly believe there are no such things as "bad dogs", just owners that think they know all they need to as owners (and thus blame the dog when something doesn't work).

But I also need to mention how useful the "Puppy Aptitude Test" was for us. We used it while looking for a puppy, and it was how Baker responded to our informal "quizzes" that brought us to the dog meant for us.

Buy the book AND follow through with its advice. ESPECIALLY, give your dog the time it deserves and needs, and you'll all reap enormous awards.

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE book for puppies   May 7, 1998
You MUST read this book if you have a puppy of any type! I only wish I had this BEFORE I got Fidget (my pug).

5 out of 5 stars The best for new puppy owners   April 28, 1998
This book is great for new puppy owners. There is tapes by New Skete Monks. Even though the Monks raise shepherds this book is good for all breeds. I raise guide dogs and refer to their book and tapes. I've been doing this volunteer service for 4 years and always learn something new when reading or viewing the tapes. I recommend this to all new puppy owners.

5 out of 5 stars Great for all puppy owners, also their tapes are marvelous   April 7, 1998
I raise guide dogs and refer to their book all the time. They also have video tapes avaiable and they to are marvelous. I have recommended this book to a lot of new puppy owners and they all said it was very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars An indispensible tool for every puppy owner   January 21, 1998

I have quite a lot of experience with animals having worked around horses my whole life, as well as having a "collection" of household pets, and I considered myself to be competent in the field of dog ownership. One thing lacking in my background, however, was puppy ownership. I have a beautifully behaved adult dog I adopted from a pound, but decided a puppy was in order to carry on with my adult dog who is now quite advanced in age. Without this book, I really doubt that I would have known how to progress in training a puppy. The Monks of New Skete have a prose style that is a pleasure to read (I couldn't put it down), and their insights into dog behavior make so much sense once they are read, but never are "obvious." I plan on giving a copy of this book to each and every friend and family member who acquires a new puppy regardless of their experience. If you have a new puppy or especially if you are even considering getting a puppy, I urge you strongly to get this book and read it cover to cover -- you will not regret it!
