One of the best out there August 27, 2005 Christopher J. Deasy (Depends on the time of year) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Anyone who has, or is thinking about getting a puppy will benefit from owning this book. Even if you have a grown dog, this book gives great advice. I really enjoy the approach the Monks take: They do an admirable job of explaining the logic behind their tried and true training techniques. After you finish this book you'll feel like a pro- but be gentle in spreding the knowledge... telling people how to raise their dog is not the way to go about it (if you tried you know)... slip some dog owner this book as a gift- let the experts convince 'em. One more thing: The monks are so good at their explanations that it is easy to apply to your pet.... something other books seem to be lacking.
The Art of Raising a Puppy August 26, 2005 Jesse David Self (New Orleans) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The monks of New Skete give state of the art advice on raising a puppy. If you want a well adjusted, loving, loyal friend ... read this book. I've used their method and it works! Good job.
Roy? Who cares .. July 19, 2005 David Edmonson (Austin, TX) Regarding the review below mine: Roy, what does this have to do with the book? Does your experience with Amazon require you to rate the book so poorly? Take up your beef with Amazon, not this book -- which, by the way, is an absolutely wonderful tome on how to successfully raise a sane, healthy puppy. Fully recommended!
Nothing missing! July 17, 2005 Annon 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is a wonderful book! I could not find a topic that they did not cover.......and well!! From what breed of dog best suits you, how to find a breeder, what to look for in your breeder, every possible problem you could think of encountering, and solutions to them. The book is common sense how to handle a pup. It give reasons for why pups respond as they do. The instincts that cause certain behaviors (that we humans can find annoying-but after understanding why-you might not). How to make yourself the leader of the pack (alpha-dog) so that they pup looks to you for guidance and does not run the house. I've read so many how-to books and this one touches on every subject from before start to finish. It also is an easy, enjoyable read.
