From a professional point of view...... October 1, 2005 T. Torres (Corona, Ca.) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
I work in a local Animal Hospital and I see thousands of dogs walk through our doors...some of them well trained, and some of them not. This book gives you information on everything from hand raising an abandoned puppy, puppy stages and development to training. Most people aren't aware that the only real successful way to have a well trained, well rounded, happy dog is by raising and training with love. Yes, you can succeed in training your dog with an iron fist, but your dog's scared, cowering submission will more than likely turn into agressive, violent behavior towards you or your loved ones. I have had nothing but success in reading this book and it is the only book I recommend in my hospital to owner's with new puppies.
The New Skete Monks and The Art of Raising a Puppy September 29, 2005 Sharon Cantrall (Ukiah, CA USA) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
This fine "puppy book" gets 5 stars from me because it covers just about everything a potential puppy owner would be looking for in a puppy book. Even though the New Skete Monks raise German Shepherd puppies, the text is written to pertain to any breed of puppy. The Monks have wonderful ideas for all stages of puppy life and the books takes us through the months as our puppies age. The Monks even help us eat our dinner in peace and quiet without having a young puppy leaping and begging at the table. Photographs of of young ones appear throughout the book and only add to this excellent book. There are several references in the book to problem puppies which the Monks have taken in and helped in owner survival. It is most interesting to see how the problems are solved and in only a caring and kind way. Please enjoy this fine book as I have with my two Whippet puppies.
A Must Read for New Puppy Owners or Soon-to-be September 25, 2005 Donald Logan (Landing, New Jersey, USA) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
A very engaging, thorough and practical guide book! One that I wish I had read prior to getting my Yorkie pup. The book is laid out in a logical manner, and although the major references stem from the New Skete Monks vast experience with German Shepherds, the knowledge that they share is easily applicable to all breeds. Not living in a monastery does have its drawbacks as I do not have all of the time to carefully follow their training program. Nevertheless, their insights (both spiritual and practical) have been of enormous benefit to me in raising my puppy. I am very indebted to this wise and caring community.
