 The only book you will ever need for your dog August 3, 2006

My wife and I have had "Ladybug" for five months, she is a 60lb American Bulldog whose hobbies used to include: scaring the bejeezus out of every bike rider she saw, pulling like a freight train on the leash, barking relentlessly for attention, and completely dominating our lives. After reading Cesar's book and using his methods we changed Ladybug into a well balanced dog in three days. I am not exaggerating at all, it only took three days. While much of the book is Cesar's biography and his opinions on dog's in America, these points are vital to his method. If the reader does not understand the pack mentality and the importance of being the dominant resident in their own home they will NEVER be able to implement Cesar's method with success.
If there is a fault with this book it is that it makes you too critical of your friend's animals. I find myself getting on my parents' last nerve telling them everything they are doing wrong with their dog. It is very hard to resist correcting other dogs since the method is so easy to do and is so effective.

It's definitely not a "How To" book and Mr. Milan is gracious enough to tell you so at the start. However, what it is remains a mystery to me. It seems mostly a way of Mr. Milan congratulating himself on a job well done, and convenient way to drop the name of celebety figures with whom he has worked or become acquainted. Save yourself the time and read the last chapter; it is probably the best one and summartizes the rest of the book.

If you love dogs, if you have a dog, and if you can admit to yourself that your dog might have an issue or two, this book will open your eyes and put you inside the head of your dog. (It also helps if you have seen Cesar Millan's show "Dog Whisperer" on National Geographic channel, but it isn't critical.)
I have never seen anything like Cesar Millan. You will read, here and there, extremely negative reviews of his work and of him as a person; I suggest you ignore them. In his show and in the book, Cesar uses methods that are "calm-assertive", as he continually puts it, to rehabilate dogs, not train them. There is a difference. Most any dog that isn't over the edge into extreme aggressiveness or fear/anxiety, can be "trained" to sit, lay down, stay, etc., via a variety of methods, including food bribes. But those dogs may or may not be in what Cesar calls a "calm-submissive" state of mind.
It would take too much space to explain all that here, and Cesar--in his book and on his show--will do a much better job than I of laying it all out anyway. What you must keep in mind is that Cesar is a dog behaviorist, not a dog trainer. And he has the uncanny ability of being able to make humans see the world thru their dog's eyes. It is a view most owners have never imagined existed, much less have seen for themselves. As far as the TV show goes, he can do this so well that many of the dogs' stories can bring you to tears, not just for how they may have been abused before they were rescued (many of the dogs are rescues), but the intensity of some of the rehabilitations and the final relief the dog experiences when he/she can finally let go of the burden they have been carrying.
The book will explain what is a dog's natural state of being, and how far removed from that natural state so many dogs have become here in the U.S.--a recurring theme is that we treat them as four-legged human beings, or as babies, rather than as dogs that have a much different psychology than do we humans.
Here's one quick test to let yourself know if your dog has issues: when you walk your dog for his daily exercise, does he/she walk in front of you, or next to or behind you? If you answered "in front", buy the book and find out why this is the wrong position for your dog to be in. And how it can be just one symptom of greater issues you may not be aware of, or have been ignoring.
It's not enough to just give them love. Get the book and let Cesar explain why.

Ok. Mr. Millan might not be the best writer. Who cares? I won't pass judgement on his writing skills. The man works wonders with the dogs, however. It's obvious that he has passion and love for these animals and it shows. Even the dogs can sense his charisma.
I was on a park bench one day last summer and saw an elderly lady walking her very old looking Chiguagua when suddenly it stopped and sat right in the middle of the sidewalk blocking the path of every pedestrian that came by.
20 minutes later, the dog finally decides to get up and walk. Ok...so the dog is old and wanted a break. That's not the point. The lady was totally dominated by her dog and after pleading with it for a long while, they finally walked off together. I actually heard her say, "Come on. It's late. We gotta get home."
The problem I see on Mr. Millan's show is not the dogs really but the people. They have their heads in their **ses. They spoil their dogs too much.
What? I'm having dinner on the floor cuz my dogs are on the couch? Are you nuts? Since when do dogs wear the pants in the house?
Wake up people! Take charge of your dogs and of your lives. Please.

Cesar Millan gives very good advice as to how to care for, train, and handle dogs in a multi-dog environment. Any dog ower would benefit from this book.
