a very perceptive look at human/animal relationships. September 1, 1999 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
i'm so sick of hearing people tell me i love my dogs only because i don't have children. if i wanted children i would have had them, but like ms knapp, i chose to live with dogs. bravo caroline! what a warm, wonderful book!
Excellent book for all lovers of animals August 7, 1999 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
From the first chapter I knew that Carolyn was exactly where I was at. I think the system of values is a little mixed up in this country when people can say you're spending too much time with that animal but it's okay to go to night clubs and bars and "hunt" for a companion. Give me my dog any day!
A must for Dog lovers August 3, 1999 M.J. Rose (Greenwich, Ct USA) 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
I read this book the weekend after losing my thirteen year old maltese and I laughed and cried my way through every wonderful word. Knapp is a terrific writer and I'm glad she has Lucille in her life. And that her book is now in my life.
A wordy examiniation of needy humans and their canines July 19, 1999 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
Descriptions of mentally healthy humans and their relationships with their dogs are few and brief. Largely, Ms. Knapp's prose concentrates on people who treat dogs as if they are children or at least semi-human. She focuses on reclusive and troubled people who, having failed in normal healthy human relationships, turn to canines. Dogs are intelligent and friendly animals who try hard to please the pack leader. They are not antropomorphic little humans. Sadly, few examples of this more commonly held view exist in this book. A much better book about the human/canine relationship is "Understanding Dogs", by Clinton Sanders.
Interesting perspective on dog owners June 19, 1999 I loved Drinking a Love Story as well as this book, but I'm not sure why. Caroline Knapp writes well but there is never an order to anything. It's like conversations with a daily friend that always hit the same topic. But still, I have to say I was anxious to read all the anecdotal tales of all the dogs and there owner projections. Just made me miss my dog and want to get home.
