2 out of 5 stars I have to agree with A. Breyer   March 19, 2000

I love a good book about how we love our dogs... BUT this book just isn't a good book. She goes from being an average loving dog owner to some political dog owner nut. Not everyone believes that your dog should have a blue ribbon in obedience to be a good dog. Unfortunately, this is the type of person she basically ended up coming across as. Too bad, it could've been a really good book.

3 out of 5 stars Affirming but agenda-ridden!   February 11, 2000

I enjoyed this book a good deal, but I thought Caroline's anecdotal examples were a little more compelling than her own self-analysis. The best parts of the book focused on Lucille, not Caroline. That said, it was nice to have the validation that there are plenty of us out there who consider the dog more than a pet.

So I am not the only one who treats her dog like a child? My Lhasa Apso is 6 mos. and his name is Bailey. For the first time in my life, I actually underlined sentences in a book I was reading for my own enjoyment. I continually nodded my head at the statements that Caroline Knapp made. She is a brilliant author who wrote a story that has been a long time coming. If anyone knows how I can e-mail the author to commend her on her work I would appreciate it. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars I'm not alone   January 14, 2000

I finally realized I wasn't alone, Caroline Knapp and I share so many feelings. As I sat in my comfortable chair with my dog at my feet I wept with emotion. I thought something was wrong with me because of my obsession with my dog, now I know I'm not alone, there are many of us. This book was such a great self-help book for me as well as funny and inspirational. Thank you Caroline Knapp.

3 out of 5 stars A good writer but the book did not hold me   December 31, 1999

I bought PACK OF TWO because I thought the description of the book's premise: a 30-something woman without lover or family finds happiness in her dog. And I could tell by peeking at the book's end that Knapp was a bright, feeling author. But I found that as I moved through the chapters, the author made the same point over and over. If she feels that her relationship with her dog is great for most of the book -- where is the drama in that? If she questioned her attachment to her dog more, it might have been more persuasive for me.

I was glad by Chapter 7 she dealt the how her pet came between she and her boyfriend in a less than healthy way. But it made me want to hear more dialogue from the boyfriend to hear his point of view of Knapp's attachment to her dog. I wanted conflict and drama -- and that isn't possible when you let only one voice speak.
