Terrific book for anyone who "loves" their dog too much. January 1, 1999 bostonjo34@aol.com (Boston, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book takes a different path than most available dog books because the author says what so many authors of these type of books are afraid to say. " I am in love with my dog" This totally honest portrayal of how a dog changed her life and taught her about life made me realize for the first time that I am not alone in my overwhelming emotions for my dog. The book is best when she talks about her own dog and their shared experiences and less so when she tries to incorporate other peoples stories and draw conclusions. Still this eloquent writer managed to do in her book what no-one else has been able to. Get me to read a book about dogs cover to cover like a mystery novel. I couldn't put it down.
True dog lovers will enjoy this book! November 20, 1998 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Since I have a bond with my dogs which is similar to the relationship Ms. Knapp enjoys with Lucille, I could relate to this book. From the toy-strewn living room, to the romps in the woods, to the wonderful feelings of companionship, I nodded with recognition at every chapter. Anyone who has a strong, close bond with their dog should enjoy this book.
This is an interesting account of the human-canine bond. November 9, 1998 Wilma H. Miller (Normal, Illinois) I very much enjoyed reading this book. As the loving owner of a nine-year-old golden retriever, I thought that I was as devoted to my dog as any human can be. However, after reading this book, I found that this is not true. I commend the author using a dog for comfort instead of liquor. I recommend this book highly for any person who truly loves dogs and wants to understand the complexity of the human-canine bond much better. I would not, however, recommend it people who do not really love and value dogs. I doubt that they would find it very interesting.
LOVED IT November 2, 1998 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I just had an arguement with my mother. "Why do you have the dogs? Why put up with the dirt? Couldn't you use the time better? Wouldn't the money be better spent elsewhere?" she asked. I know why I need the dogs, I just could not find the right words to make her understand.Well, that's okay now. Carolina Knapp has found them and given them to me in this book. She addresses questions of need, of emotional comfort, of substitute relationships ... all things other people condescendingly say to and about involved dog owners. And she gives answers that ring true. I plan to buy my mother a copy of Pack of Two. She swears she'll read it. If you have been in the same position - defending yourself or feeling guilty because of your love for a dog, get this book. Or if you have a loved one who in your eyes "goes overboard" for a dog, you need to read it too.
Wonderful book. October 25, 1998 bulls@theramp.net (Bradley, Illinois) I am a fellow dog lover and this book was great. I could relate to the author in many ways. Nice to know someone out there understands dog lovers and nice to know we're not alone. Hope she has a follow up soon. Mother of 2 Wire Fox Terriers Sheila LaGesse
