The professional method of basic training for working dogs. August 22, 1998 27 out of 29 found this review helpful
This is two books in one. One half is actually "The Koehler Method of Dog Training" which has been "the standard" for basic obedience training of military, police and other working dogs since World War II when Koehler pioneered them. The goal is to develop stability and obedience in a dog so that you have it "when you need it the most." David Dikeman's dog training method is a polished version of Koehler's method. The other half of this book details how to turn even the tinest dog into a man eater. Koehler shows how to prevent your agressive trained dog from being dangerously unpredictable and unstable. Instead, he shows how, with the help of additional trainers playing the part of bad guy, to create specific situations in which the dog is trained exactly how to respond and how not to. This book pretty much stops at guard dog training and doesn't delve too much into protection or attack training, but it does establish the principles. Unshakable obedience must be developed in a dog before giving it aggression training and Koehler shows you how.
This is a great book March 13, 1998 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
We have a male Rottwieler and we got this book when he was a puppy. We were confused on how to train him.Mr.Koehler's book was a great asset. He tells it to you staight and the results if you chose to try it your own way.He gives examples of other dogs that have not been trained well and we all know those kind of dogs.I at first thought that it was a little harsh, but when faced with the reality that we have a dog that has the potential of severly injuring a person the firmness in training and high expectations for correct behaviour on both dog and owner are not to be dismissed. We have had excellent results by following his EVERY step in the book. I am very thankful for his book it has made a Rottwieller very happy and obedient.
Excellent Training Methods December 6, 1997 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
Koehler is an authority on dog training and this book teaches you how to use your dog's instincts for protecting his territory to your advantage. Warning: the section on training your dog to attack is not for novice trainers!
The best overall training book of its kind. January 8, 1997 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
This book is one of Koehler's best. It contains the most effective methods for training dogs in the three levels of protection; alert, threat and attack. This book will take you through each level of of training with easily understood explainations and pictures. If you want to protection train your dog with humane but thorough methods of training, this book is for you. I have used Mr. Koehler book for training all of my dogs and my customers dogs in my security dog company and had perfect results every time. Sylvan Malis.
