5 out of 5 stars Sensible method   December 26, 2001

Kohler, late chief trainer at Disney, gives instruction in obedience training first, then a discussion of why NOT to attack-train, only then advanced instruction. He warns that the dog must be chosen carefully; tells exactly how to choose. Gives warnings of the consequences, to animal and trainer, of abuse. (Trainer must be smarter than dog for these methods or any others to be effective.) He recommends a privately-owned dog be left to decide its own agression level. I've used his methods with 5 rescued dogs (1 stray) - 5 happy pets, none shy, none crazy.

1 out of 5 stars An effective and athoritative guide for ruining your dog-   November 8, 2001

I cannot condemn this book enough. I have seen so many dogs turned either vicoius or neurotic by using Koeler's methods, I am 100% sure this is not the way to go. I refer to the Koeler methods as the "Short-Tempered" method for training a dog. By punishing a dog before it has a chance to learn what is expected of it, it creates stress and confusion, thereby making it impossible for the dog to learn anything. I find his methods for dealing with handler agressive (fearful????) dogs particularly objectionable, as they will cause a dog reacting out of fear to go into full blown attack mode and possibly seriously injure the handler. The average pet owner cannot discern betweeen an animal acting out of domanance and one acting out of fear. Without this critical piece of information, one cannot train a dog for guard work using these methods.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any better than this!!!   August 13, 2001

This book is the the ultimate dog training book if you follow the directions closely(you can't get soft). I have only used the obediance sections but I am sure that the gaurd dog training section will work as well and that the dogs would enjoy this training since it capitalizes on the dogs natural instincts. I have had this book for several years and would never depart from it as every dog I will ever own will go through atleast the obediance section. I have trained two dogs with the obedience section and the training does miracles. If you are interested in training dogs buy this book and waste no time looking further for any other books this one is it.
