5 out of 5 stars Updated 2nd edition is even better than the first!   April 3, 2007

As a dog trainer/behavior specialist, I have had Paul Owens' original version of this book in my collection for years. I always appreciated his non-violent approach to training. Now we have an updated, even better 2nd edition! Paul takes the time to explain why and how positive training methods work. In his "Nine Ingredients for Optimum Health & Growth" he talks about meeting your dog's basic needs such as nutrition, play, mental stimulation, and other things that set the stage for successful training. The section on how to "speak dog" and communicate with your dog is invaluable. The more a person understands about how to communicate with their dog, the less need there is for any type of force. The actual training section is well layed out, taking the reader from "grade school level" through "high school level". I like this approach, as it makes it simple to build on the exercise as the dog gets better at it. The book is peppered with helpful illustrations, well-written, enjoyable, and packed with useful information. Highly recommended! - Nicole Wilde, author Help for Your Fearful Dog: A Step-by-Step Guide to Helping Your Dog Conquer His Fears and So You Want to be a Dog Trainer (2nd edition)

This book is fantastic! I read this book and had my dog sitting and lying down in minutes without using a choke collar. It's easy to follow the instructions and there are some really informative sections. You won't need any other dog training book, ever!

5 out of 5 stars This method really works!!!   March 31, 2007

I've used the choke collar method of dog training. Sure, it works but my pet is my companion and I don't usually choke my friends. I heard about Paul Owen's method and bought his book. Intrigued, and living in the Los Angeles area, I signed up for his class. I am getting results QUICKER and with less stress on myself and my pet. My dog loves to go to class! This book is fantastic and so is Paul Owens. It's a shame that so many dogs are still being "trained" using choking or any other intimidating method. Anyone interested in training their dog should buy this book. And, if you live in Los Angeles, take his class. Paul is fantastic (and entertaining) and his method really works! As he says, this same method works well on children and spouses.

I have known Paul for several years and have taken my dogs to classes with him many times. His approach is very straight forward and it works. In addition he emphasizes RAISE WITH PRAISE and never uses any kind of negativity in his training. I rescued a 9 month old from a shelter on a Saturday. We came home and started playing using some of Pauls' teaching techniques and by Sunday morning, she was "sitting" and fetching a ball! His approach comes from a place of love and it is effective. If you live in Los Angeles area, his group classes are really fun and if you have an agressive dog he has great socializing games to help slowly integrate your dog into situations that cause stress. I can't recommend it highly enough

I know there have been a bunch of glowing reviews for this book but not one of them will be from me. I'm sorry, but I think this guy is a certified nut-case. I'm not saying that there are not some good points here, but there is far too much irrelevant tripe.

Oh, come on. Dogs can't think like humans do. New Age? Baloney!! Dogs are dogs. They are dogs first, last and always. Some of them are smarter than others, but the basic thing they have to learn is that they don't run things. Some breeds are worse at trying to do this than others. My experience is that the herding dogs are very good at this as it is inbred in them to take charge. Let them take charge and you have a problem on your hands. I think this is true to some extent of all dogs. One needs to be very confident going in to train dogs, especially the large breeds such as Rottweilers and Shepherds, but they are not people and treating them as such will only cause a problem.

Above all one should be kind toward them as toward all animals, but they are NOT people.
