Some Good Training Concepts But... July 2, 2007 S. Case (Jacksonville, FL) 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
This book has some good concepts on training but nothing that I have not seen elsewhere. A few of the reasons for the low rating are the extra chapters in learning to breath, and how to speak dog. If I want to learn how to do meditation breathing I will buy a new age book. Also the diets recommended in this book for your dog are for those who have a 6 figure income and an organic grocery store available to them. The author(s) also assume that you do not have to work to have this income based on the recommended daily routine for caring for your dog. I also was misled by the title thinking that this was the Dog Whisperer from the television show; it is not. I found this out after I bought the book and I finally got to see the show. What an injustice this book does to his television shows' name. I do not recommend this book.
GREAT BOOK BUT GET THE NEW EDITION! June 26, 2007 M. A. Butler (N Hollywood, CA United States) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Paul Owens is a genius! But instead of getting this old version - get the new, revised 2007 edition of this book. It is EVEN BETTER! This pioneering book (by the ORIGINAL Dog Whisperer, Paul Owens) was groundbreaking in 1999 when it was published. But the 2nd edition has so much more great stuff in it, I just had to get it, too...it is chock full of additional tips and more guidelines for even easier training. (BEWARE though, the covers look almost exactly the same.) Here's the link to the page for the new edition: The Dog Whisperer: A Compassionate, Nonviolent Approach to Training And I also got Paul Owens' DVD: The Dog Whisperer: Beginning and Intermediate Dog Training by Paul Owens It's also extremely helpful in making dog training fast, easy and fun. Paul Owens uses only positive methods! I LOVE THAT! No jerking on leashes or collars or other stuff that feels bad.
eagerly awaited revised edition June 20, 2007 J. Mielziner (Studio City, Ca) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I thought the first edition of the DOG WHISPERER was amazing. I was however, really excited to see that Mr. Owens came up with a revised second edition which, for me, sets a new standard for positive dog training. Dog training is ever-evolving and as good as the first edition was, the second edition reflects the best of what positive dog training has to offer. It is truly a gift to anyone interested in raising and training a dog with kindness and compassion. Jennifer Mielziner - Fer's Furry Friends
I AM NOW A DOG WHISPHERER May 3, 2007 Stephen M. Pennington (Burbank Ca) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought the new book and the DVD. I was also in Paul's group training class. The book and the DVD helped fill in the gaps for me while I continued to train my dog at home. I especially enjoyed the DVD. The content and presentation provides a visual for me that helps me cement my technique for training. The characterizations by the dogs are very clever and entertaining. My dog also enjoys watching the DVD. I reallly can't say enough good things about Paul and his training techniques. Just buy the book and the DVD. You will never regret it. I thank you and so does "Sweetie".
It Works! It's Practical! And with a Bigger Message that I Love! April 22, 2007 M. A. Butler (N Hollywood, CA United States) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
What a great book! The choke collar always felt wrong to me and I was glad to read what Owens says about it. It makes total sense that you don't need force or even the threat of force to train a dog - or anyone else for that matter. Gee, I'd never choke my kids! Why would I want to choke my dog? I got FASTER results using the POSITIVE training methods in this book - plus I feel really good about them, too - happier dog and happier me. That other "dog whisperer" on TV seems so suave but his methods seem so mean-spirited and primitive. I read somewhere that animal humane organizations have called his methods "inhumane." A dog is family and should be treated with love. And not only for the dog's wellbeing! It's a good example for the kids! I want them to learn to treat others with kindness- no matter whether those "others" are two legged or four legged. So for me, the method I choose for training my dog is not just about dog training. It is connected with how I raise my kids and with building a world based on kindness and consideration for others. And this book was all about that and more.
