5 out of 5 stars Top Dog   September 10, 2002

I would have written my thoughts on Patricia McConnell's book. " The Other End of the Leash" sooner, but I was too busy reading and rereading this exceptional book. I am the owner of multiple dogs (as well as being owned by multiple dogs), and few books address both the behavior of one and many as well as Patricia McConnell has--and no book has done it better.

The Other End of the Leash weaves stories and lessons in a way that will capture every reader. The highest compliment I can pay to this indispensable book is that it was written by someone who really loves dogs, and it shows.

5 out of 5 stars The book all dogs have been waiting for!   September 2, 2002

For those of us who love dogs and enjoy working with them everyday, it is a real joy to find a book that shows so much respect for dogs as intelligent, observant, thinking beings. If every human would read this book, the life of every dog on earth would be easier and happier, and, of course, the humans would enjoy considerable benefit as well because they would understand their dogs so much better.

This is one of the best books I've read on the subject. McConnell's book is not a "how to" training book, but rather an insightful, well-written book about canine behavior. (She's an ethologist and a certified animal behaviorist specializing in aggression.)

I also highly recommend the enormously useful book "Understanding 'Dog Mind,'" by Bonnie Bergin. This is perhaps the single best book ever written on canine behavior and training. (Bergin pioneered the "service dog" concept and founded the first and largest organization training service dogs for the disabled.)

I've never written this about a Non-Fiction Book, but "The Other End of the Leash" is so good you can't put it down and don't want it to end!

My library of dog books is growing steadily, and this book is the latest addition. It is also the only one that I have read from cover to cover. Unlike other dog training books that I have read, this book does not give you step by step instructions on how to solve certain dog behavioural issues. Instead, Dr. McConnell, in fluid and conversational prose, reveals to readers what years of research and experience have taught her about dog behaviours. She draws parallels between dogs and humans, and also demonstrates, through stories, how humans often mis-read and mis-communicate with our doggie partners. The real-life stories are sometimes funny, sometimes bittersweet, and sometimes downright sad, but they all serve a purpose - to teach us why dogs behave the ways they do, and how us humans can improve and enhance our relationships with our canine friends by having a better and deeper understanding of how they communicate. An excellent read and certainly a critical addition to a dog-lover's library.
