Calming Signs: Of Dogs and People November 29, 2001 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
Turid Rugaas' ON TALKING TERMS WITH DOGS:CALMING SIGNS is essential reading for anyone who wants to communicate with dogs, whether as a pet owner, trainer, or kid with a "dangerous" dog next door. After memorizing it myself, I keep sending copies to friends' children. I think knowing something of dogs' universal language helps us understand people as well. And it keeps the pit bull next door, who is yawning because it's uncomfortable with our staring at it, or wagging its tail because it is worried, more safe from us and from our children.
Calming Signals Work! November 20, 2001 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Within minutes of reading a few pages from this book, my relationship with my puppy changed forever. Suddenly, we were communicating with each other and it worked. Three years later, it still works and is part of our everyday life together. This book is simple, to the point, and essential for all dog lovers who want to be able to better understand their dog. The subtle signals are obvious once Rugaas reveals them. I have recommended this book to thousands of owners (personally and through e-mail lists). The feedback is all positive. One owner had tried for years to have her dog cooperate when shown. Using calming signals, her dog was at ease and able to stay in the ring for the first time ever. I can't imagine having a dog without this knowledge.
DogRead book of the month October 31, 2001 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book was chose to be on the prestigious 'DogRead' as a book selection of the month. We only do 12 books a year and this was March 2000. The author comes on line for the whole month to answer questions on the book. It was very well received by our 3000 member email group. The author was very knowledgeable and easy to understand even though also very in depth.treshell owner DogRead ...
This is a wonderful resource! September 27, 2001 71 out of 72 found this review helpful
This an exceptional book that should be mandatory reading for all dog owners. If you have a problem dog, or just want to understand why dogs do what they do, this book is for you. This book will make for more happy owners and dogs. It is a great book for those of you who dont like to or simply dont have the time to read a lot. It is a to-the-point, no-nonsense and easy to read introduction to canine communication that explains dog behavior and interpreting dog communication signals in an easy to understand way. This a a short but very enlightening volume, filled with a ton of great information. A bit off-beat and quirky at times, it is a wonderful resource no dog owners library should be without. And the affordable price makes it even more worth while! I will continue to buy it as a gift for my dog-training friends and students.
A Thin Book to Get Through Our Thick Heads August 9, 2001 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
A sniff is just a sniff - or is it? "Calming Signals" - also called "aggression cut off signals" - contain vital information for us. Get it. Read it. Turid is on the right track with the subtleties of canine communication. There's more...a shorter video showing the signals and a day-long seminar (from Canada) on video that is not to be missed if you are as fascinated as I am with this!
