GOOD, but not GREAT. May 9, 2001 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is a good, basic book about dog training. Some of the insite into why dogs do what they do and what they are really thinking is great information to have. But, if you are serious about dog training it will take more than just this one book to give you all the base knowlege you need. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in dogs though. The information it has is accurate and useful and the illustrations are fun and educational. I agree with the person who said it would be a great dog training book for younger children to start with. The illustrations make this book very understandable for everyone. Add it to your collection for the pictures and basic information, but do keep reading because there are more comprehensive dog training manuals out there.
Great Entry into Dog Training February 17, 2001 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Best part is the simple approach with its cartoon art which illustrates comically the training point under discussion.Parents with children would do well to get and use this book. Later on, however, probably like to move on to other, more detailed helps.
Great training book for adults as well as kids August 27, 2000 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book covers all the basics and explains how the dog views the trainer's actions. The chapters are short and concise with a summary at the end of each recapping the essentials. Throughout the chapters are humorous pictures that really get the point across. My 7 year old daughter read this and found it helpful and funny as well. A great book to read BEFORE getting the puppy so you can be prepared. It is very straightforward and easy to understand.
The absolute best book for a new dog owner. January 22, 2000 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book gives the new dog owner a humorous and commonsense way to train a new puppy. The authors take the dog's eye view of training and help the trainer to see what they are doing from the dog's perspective. The cartoons are excellent and as I have found out the Volhard method works like no other!
A must for the Animal Training Impaired! July 16, 1999 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
I have never trained a dog before and know little to nothing about training puppies or dogs. My daughter (a real dog/animal lover) just got an impossible dog that my husband and I were considering ridding our house of, when my neighbor gave us this truly honest and complete book on how dogs think and the appropriate training for them to be good pets. We had no clue how to turn our nightmare around without devastating our child. The book is written so clearly and the procedures are so affective, Little Rosa is slowly becoming a part of our family and will probably stay with us for the long term. Unlike most training manuals, this book explains exactly what is happening in the dog's mind and what is expected. If the book is closely followed the dog enjoys the guiding and will be kept safe, and the owners will enjoy the dog. Highly recommended for anyone that hasn't got a clue how dogs should be treated to obtain likeable pets. Thank you to the Mantell family for giving us this book.
