Finally a great print of Braveheart! February 8, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I was very disappointed with the initial release of Braveheart, my Number 1 Favorite (Co-favorite with Dances with Wolves) film of all time. There were dirt specks, hairs and other particles on the print. It was obviously not cleaned before production printing. Now we have, not only a clean, pristine print, but commentary from Mel and new features. Surprisingly, Mel knows less about some of his co-stars than I do. He refers to Michael Byrne as John Byrne and doesn't mention the names of others, but this makes little difference as we now have a great copy of a truly great film. I highly recommend it.
AMAZING February 6, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
My family is Scottish, so William Wallace was always a household name. His story is amazing and this movie truly follows it well. The only thing not 100% true is the love affair with the French princess, but it was for the sake of the movie. Besides that, it is very accurate. It's very violent for children, so I would not recommend it for them, but it's well made. I would give it 6 out of 5, because it shows how those wonderful English were to my ancestors.
Be forewarned January 28, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Although the movie is historically interesting and well acted, parents should be cautioned. Battle scenes are gory and the torture of Wallace made me squirm.
Perhaps my favorite movie ever. January 20, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Legends are rarely fully exploited with honor in film. But, Mel Gibson establishes a legend here that will move audiences for generations. There are some minor flaws in the film (where did the spears come from at Stirling?) but overall it is excellently imagined and portrayed. The combat is grisly and powerful.
I'm not going to go into the story much, as I feel that providing spoilers really detracts from a review. In this film are some cliched approaches to medieval legend. Oppressive king. Valiant rebel. Woman in danger. There are also a few stereotypes that are not necessary for the advancement of the story. Overall, though, this is one of the most powerful emotional dramas I've ever watched. Normally action films are short on drama. Mel Gibson doesn't fall into that trap here.
What is truly remarkable is the sympathy garnered for the lead character, William Wallace, who loses everything when he only desires to have peace and raise a family. His response to not having what he desires is overwhelming and precisely expressed. When he loses everything at the point of a knife, he rebels against everything that comes from the English king. He takes the absolute position that so long as there is no justice then there will be no peace for the English tyrant.
This is an epic movie that was long overdue from the movie industry. It is epic and legendary for the stunning visual effects. The battle scenes are powerful looks at what battles from that era were probably like, although the specific geography for the actual effort at revolt is rejected in order to make the combat more grand and powerful.
In the end the legendary Wallace is elevated to almost Messianic levels and the audience is driven to a white hot passion for freedom and patriotism.
This is probably the best work Mel Gibson ever contributed to the movie world. Highly recommended.
They'll never take our freedom! January 20, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Mel Gibson did a pretty good in this epic movie. I love these long, over done movies with big battle scenes. This movie had some of the most impressive battles in the history of film. The acting was very good but a little corny and sappy in alot of places. Still a very good film if you like long, epic war movies. Awesome battle scenes.
