Buy ONLY the Criterion release February 25, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I bought the $9.99 version but then ended up buying the Criterion release and giving away the other one. I was shcoked at the dust, sparkles and grain in the standard release. The Criterion release is so much better. Cleaned up and improved in every way. This is the way every film should be transferred to DVD by the studio. If you are thinking about owning this movie, that is the one to buy. Critereon's quality is so high, I look forward to buying some of there other releases.
An awful movie that was beautifully filmed. February 11, 2008 2 out of 13 found this review helpful
I purchased this movie for my boyfriend, who is interested in film and hopes to make movies himself. He wanted it because he heard that it was a true testament to beautiful cinematography. He absolutely loved it, saying it was so beautifully made. I, on the other hand, loathed this movie. It was depressing, slow, and lacked dialogue. The characters were all unlikable and the plot was pretty stupid.
So, if you're a film person, you may find this worth purchasing for the cinematic qualities, but if you're just, say, a Richard Gere fan and are curious, I beg of you, don't waste your time or money.
Spectacular imagery... January 26, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Set in industrial days of the early 1900's where the underclass is struggling to eke out their survival. The movie is characterized by few words and many breathtaking images that seemingly come one after the other. Richard Gere plays Bill who attacks a steel mill foreman and goes on the run with his girlfriend and sister. They eventually find work on a Texas farm where his girlfriend passes off as Gere's sister and marries the wealthy farmer. The three-way tension eventually leads to tragedy. As spectacular as the images were in the movie, the plot falls substantially short and Gere's fashionable attire and clean-cut GQ look is out-of-place in this poverty stricken era. That being said, this movie should be seen for its out-of-the-world visual imagery.
As Beautiful as Ever December 13, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I first saw Days of Heaven when it was released, and my main recollection was that it was stunningly beautiful. I am happy to report that this Criterion edition restores the film to all its grandeur. I watched it on a friend's wide screen system, and we oohed and aahed over the fabulous western scenery. There is very little dialog, so the story is told in the cinematography. The interviews that are included with the special features are illuminating. A very fine film, given superb treatment.
My favorite movie of all time November 25, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Terrence Malick is one of my favorite directors, and his Days of Heaven has been my personal favorite for quite some time now. Shot almost entirely in Banff, Days of Heaven was not only an experiment in storytelling through the use of voice overs in combination with shots of nature, but also an experiment with the film medium itself, as it was shot almost entirely without artificial lighting and during and after the "magic hours". Linda's voice has that particular earthy tone and yet full of wisdom of a child who has seen more than most kids of her age. the supplemental materials on this DVD and the gorgeous transfer are well worth the purchase!
