5 out of 5 stars Apocalypse Now: this is not only a film! This is the Vietnam War!   February 15, 2008

Realistic, drammatic, perfect in every aspect: this film, from the director Francis Ford Coppola, is a true section of the American conflict in Vietnam! Beautiful! This dvd version is special in every sense!

5 out of 5 stars Aspect Ration information   February 10, 2008

Not much to add about this except that the aspect ratio is not 2:35:1 as stated. It is 1:77:1. There is no version of Apocalypse Now currently available at 2:35:1. This is about the best your'e going to get. The Complete Dossier version is cropped at 1:66:1 so beware.

5 out of 5 stars DVD needed extra content   January 27, 2008

As the Vietnam War fades into the past, a fresh look at war movies may be due, with the "Apocalypse Now Redux" an excellent candidate. What was a superior original movie is still a superior movie with the additional footage. The arguments that it is a somewhat better film are reasonable, as are the arguments that the footage adds little value and perhaps harms the flow. I consider the change a basic wash, with some benefits here and there (more time with Kurtz), some negatives (the second Playboy scene adds little, and Kilgore looking for his surfboard are examples), and some that I can't decide (the French plantation).

With the controversies at the time gone, the viewer may focus on the movie itself, rather than whether it was outrageous for Brando to get $1M and other distractions. No insight is required to understand why Coppola wanted Brando as Kurtz. A perfect fit.

Forget the "Heart of Darkness" relationship, as it doesn't really matter. The story can be viewed simply as being about the nastiness of war. Enjoy the lesson, which you already knew anyway, and the flow and how Coppola develops the theme. Enjoy the over-the-top scenes, and is there a more over-the-top moment in movie history than Kilgore, napalm, and surfing? The contrast with the deadly serious scenes is astounding, yet they still come together in a model of anything goes.

The production on the DVD is vivid and lush, a beautiful film. The movie begs for additional content on the DVD. We don't need the director's comments, but we could really use his view on the additional scenes and what was still left out, how he views the movie nearly 30 years on, and anything else he feels like saying. The Redux version gave Coppola an opportunity to do so, and this movie and DVD deserve more. Sure, you can find plenty of material on the Internet, including Coppola's thoughts. When we get additional content for even trivial movies, I'd like to see it done for the classics. And Apocalypse Now is a true classic that will be watched decades hence.

3 out of 5 stars Great movie, bad DVD   January 19, 2008

This is my favorite movie of all time, so my rating certainly doesn't reflect on the quality of the movie at all, rather the DVD design. This is a two disc set and instead of putting the original on one DVD and the Redux on the other DVD they put the first half of both versions on disc 1 and the second half on disc 2. I think this ruins the flow of the movie because you have to get up and load the other dvd halfway through the movie. LAME!
