Overrated, Overhyped And Not A Very Good Movie!!! October 16, 2005 John Baranyai In this movie we see Raymond, played by Dustbin Hoffman whose character is autistic. Then he kind of gets kidnapped by Tom Cruise in the hope that maybe he will "Show Me The Money" or something like that. After a while Mr. Cruise's fims all start to look the same to me. One has to wonder if Mr. Cruise ever considered his acting skills (or lack thereof) when he continually gets upstaged by a Mentally Challenged character in this movie. I do give this movie 5 stars because once again Hollywood has provided the usual "Happy Ending" which does not occur too often in Real Life!!!
A film that mirrors the best and worst of human beings in modern society and in this sense stretches far beyond autism. October 4, 2005 Mark Twain 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Rain Man is a classic film with global appeal but certainly the one that propelled awareness of autism into the mainstream. At the same time it failed to give the public a full sense of the diversity of people on the autistic spectrum, most of who do not have savant skills at all and many of whom are not at all wooden or shuffling like Raymond in this film. But what Rain Man did do was give people an understanding of some of the challenges of autism and paved the way for a far wider public reception of the literary works of people with autism (Nobody Nowhere, Emergence, Lucy's Story etc) which generally went on to challenge the existing stereotypes with the consequence that the incidence of autism was seen to explode from 1 in 10,000 to around 1 in 160 people today. Cruise and Hoffman are outstanding in this film and the story of the opportunistic and image conscious Cruise contrasted with the 'what you see is what you get' Hoffman is gorgeous. Its a film that mirrors the best and worst of human beings in modern society and in this sense stretches far beyond autism.
ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!5 stars? It deserves 10! September 12, 2005 Siya Natseva 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
The first time I heard about "Rain Man" I just said "Ok,I may watch it!".My mother, however, insisted on me doing it as she had already heard so many good reviews about the film.Thankfully,I listened to her and checked the film out. The plot was great-I liked the way how dramatic and funny moments go together in the movie making the audience cry in a moment, then giggle. The story was good enough to make me realize some things at an early age(As far as I remember when I watched the film for the first time I was 11-12 years old). Now,I am 18 and still come back to it very often. The cast is out of a question.A very good performance by Tom Cruise(I am not a huge fan of his,but still I admit he can act). When it comes to Dustin Hoffman the only comment I can make is he is one of the best actors of all time. His performance is SUPERB!He is one of my favourite actors and I have seen many of his films. Not all of them, unfortunaltey. I have to go now,so I can't write all the things that I want to write, but I am quite sure you got the general idea.Go to the shop and buy the DVD!You won't regret it!Bye! Take care, Sisi
Brilliant! July 23, 2005 Shelby Peters (St. Paul MN USA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
My favorite movie. Can't believe how excellent D. Hoffman's performance is, as well as T. Cruise and all others. I saw this movie with my parents when I was 18,which was 17 years ago and to this day, we still talk about Rain Man as our fave movie. So many funny quotes and mannerisms of the characters. Beautiful soundtrack as well. Glad to have it on dvd.
FANTASTIC ACTING ALL THE WAY July 22, 2005 In the movie you actually get to see how great dustin hoffman can act.Tom cruise is great also in this movie they work great together and thats why it is one of my favorite movies.
