Platoon March 3, 2007 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
I love the movie Platoon. It is probably my favorite Vietnam War-era movie. I have one question though....
If you look very closes at the ID tags (dog tags) on the front cover of the movie, it gives Sgt. Elias's name and information on them, but it also lists "USMC" standing for United States Marine Corps I assume, but the 25th Infantry Division is an Army division out of Hawaii. Just a little tid bit, that is the only "branch" conflict I have found in the movie, doesn't take away from the movie at all - in fact it was probably added when they released the "special addition"
not bad February 20, 2007 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
I bought the special edition a few years back. This DVD is mostly the same, but does have some interesting deleted scenes. If you love the movie as much as I do, it's worth buying.
Epic movie that gets better year after year October 19, 2006 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
They just don't have movies like this anymore. This is not a movie that makes Charlie Sheen or Tom Berenger appeal to the young audiences who like flashy stars on sceen. This is amovie to show you the reality of war and experiences that happened to people in the past.
Charlie Sheen stars as a man who volutarily goes to war. This seems odd and he figures out why everyone was looking at him so weird when he was telling them this later in the movie. He finds out alright. Keith David plays his friend who tries to keep his spirits up and this is definitely his best role. He cheers him up in a great scene where they get extremely baked. The supporting cast in this movie is unbelievable and no flat performances here. Overall this is my favorite movie of all time. It has stood the test of time and never fails when I want to see a good movie.
I just have the old special edition, not the 20th anniversary but the extras are very nice. It has a commentary from the direcotor and a seperate one from the military advisor who worked on the film. There is also a lengthy doumentary about the making of and when I saw this I was mroe than glad I got the special edition. You would nto believe what the actors went through! It is a great making of.
Realistic, Yet Hopeless War Story. September 15, 2006 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
Based upon director and writer Oliver Stone's own experiences in Vietnam, PLATOON was the first major motion picture about that war directed by a veteran from that conflict. The movie revolves around a young American soldier, Pvt. Chris Taylor (a young Charlie Sheen) and the platoon he lives and fights with during his tour of duty. The battle sequences are very gritty, graphic, and realistic. Taylor serves under the direct leadership of Sgt. Elias Grodin (Willem Dafoe), but both men are under the command of Staff Sgt. Bob Barnes (Tom Berenger). Grodin and Barnes have two completely different views of leadership and opposing worldviews. Grodin represents everything that is good and noble and worth fighting for in the conflict, while Barnes represents all the evil and ugliness of the war. At its core then, PLATOON is a movie about the internal war for one soldier's soul between good and evil. Though Stone based the film upon his own experiences, there are scenes that have been embellished and the view Stone presents is only one view of the war--see the film WE WERE SOLDIERS for the opposite view as presented by Stone in PLATOON.
Despite the negative outlook upon life, the military, and the Vietnam War, PLATOON is probably Oliver Stone's best movie to date. Stone's direction of the film is brilliant from the two-week boot camp the actors endured before principal filming, to the fine details such as the color of the wrapping paper on the cigarettes, to filming in sequence, to recognizing the talent of Johnny Depp, Stone illustrated in PLATOON was that he was a great director and one to be reckoned with. The film contains fine performances: Tom Berenger, Willem Dafoe, Charlie Sheen, Forest Whitaker, Francesco Quinn, John C. McGinley, and Johnny Depp all give powerful portrayals that ground the movie in humanity, despite the deep metaphysical connotations. PLATOON won the 1986 Oscar for Best Picture, Stone won the Best Director Oscar, and also received a nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
I was surprised and found that I enjoyed PLATOON, though there were several parts of the film that I found myself aghast. I've never been in battle myself, but I do know that war is hell. Nevertheless, I cannot bring myself to agree with the film's negative worldview and ultimately the loss of one's soul to evil. Despite this, there are many positive things within the movie. This is a movie that any film buff should see and people who enjoy war movies might enjoy it as well (though they might prefer something more hopeful such as SAVING PRIVATE RYAN or WE WERE SOLDIERS).

Platoon, it records a story in the Vietnam War. Chris Taylor a young American soldier who is the main character of the movie, had arrived South Vietnam with his comrades. In the battlefield, it shows audiences a real battle life. Although the condition in the battlefront was bad, Taylor learned to fit in battle life, and he became an experienced soldier on the battlefront. In the scene when Taylor's leader Elias Grodin was killed by Viet soldiers, Taylor figured out Robert Barnes was the real murderer of Elias, and this scene is the cover of this movie. As the movie moves on, Taylor continued to fight with Viet soldiers and once, Taylor's company was losing because of the huge number of enemies. After bombing on the whole area, most of the soldiers died. Taylor was one of the survivals, and he found Barnes in the jungle. In the anger, he killed Barnes as what Barnes did to Elias. By the way, the newer version of Platoon has a better effect on the movie, even though it's still the same one. This movie is very compelling; it'll bring you to the world of war, a cruel, brutal and apathetic world. Again, welcome to the world of war!
