Won 4 oscars maybe deserves more September 20, 2007 Directed by Brian DePalma and stars Robert Deniro and Sean Connery, who are as untouchable as always in this one. Performances are incredible and the story is worthy of this stellar cast. Easily garners 5 stars from this reviewer.
Terrific Movie and a Decent Transfer August 24, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Since this is an "older" movie, I won't bother with reviewing the film itself, except to say that it still is one of the most entertaining and satisfying experiences you'll have at the movies.
As for the Blu-ray transfer, it's decent. The set detail and the colors really pop, particularly in scenes at the Lexington Hotel with Capone and his mob. In fact, the detail is so good as to become distracting at times -- you may find yourself marveling at the quality of the picture and forgeting about the story being told. A minor digital skip at one point may have been a disk flaw rather than a transfer flaw.
Sound quality is excellent. The opening scene explosion rocks. And Ennio Morricone's magnificent score has never sounded better. Listen through the end credits as this terrific music envelopes you.
While certainly not a reference-quality disk, the transfer is good and will make you appreciate the investment you made in a hi-def TV and player.
Great but not amazing August 16, 2007 A good transfer for a good movie. The original photography doesn't allow a better picture quality, I think. Just spend your time with a good movie.
What is with this? August 11, 2007 1 out of 12 found this review helpful
I never understood the whole homophobia thing, but I guess you get it with this movie. Okay Okay peoples, maybe perhaps it really is about some guys who are invincible but that movie already came out and that bartender that played for the Eagles, well that is a football team and they touch a lot. In fact that game, they dive and give flying bear hugs to each other. Kevin Costner is here and you know, he tried making it some emo-sap ridden baseball movie but the guys with the machine guns were not having it!
When MC Hammer jumped on stage and said "can't touch this" I just turned it off. I said to my friend "friend, why did you rent this, next time I am going with you to the store" and that was the end of our movie night
Pretty sparse for a "special collector's edition". July 29, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
The Untouchables is easily one of my all-time favorite movies, so I preordered the HD-DVD as soon as I found out about it.
The transfer is decent, but this is hardly the sort of movie you'd want to show off the capabilities of HD-DVD. On one hand, you have to accept that the film is nearly 20 years old. On the other, movies that are even older (e.g. The Jerk [HD DVD]) look better on HD-DVD. The picture quality is virtually undistinguishable from the standard DVD, for a casual viewer. If you've seen the movie several times, you'll probably notice some nuanced differences in the HD version, but certainly nothing that justifies the expense.
Perhaps more disappointingly, the "Special Collector's Edition" has next to nothing when it comes to extras. Three "documentaries" that are about 15 minutes each and are virtually indistinguishable from each other, the original trailer, and a few minutes of what seems like random filler. With the exception of the trailer, all of the extras are in 480p, not HD.
Someone tagged this as "overpriced", and I couldn't agree more. If you don't have this in your collection already, wait a while for it to join the first crop of bargain HD DVD's. If you already have the standard DVD version, there's really no reason to replace it with this.
