5 out of 5 stars Get It!   May 25, 2007

This movie will blow you away! Don't think that it is somehow inferior just because it is not made in hollywood. This is such a good quality movie, especially when you compare to movies like Batman and other such junk. Just get it. But be warned, this movie says it is unrated, but when I recieved the actuall DVD case there was a little box with an 'R' where the UNRATED should have been. And that is as it should be. The movie is terrifying and the first few beginning scenes are kinda kooky (watch it and see what I mean.) Overall, watch this movie, PLEASE!

5 out of 5 stars A movie based on a true and authentic novel   May 17, 2007

This movie has a lot of positive aspects and is definetely one
of the best war movies ever.

But several reviewers seemed to have found a negative point in this movie:
The "lack" of nazis in the movie, respectively "historical revisionism".

Let's start my view of this point with a quotation of Hitler:
"On the land I'm a hero, but on the water a coward."

Battle ships fascinated him, but he knew nothing about about naval power, so he
let Grand Admiral Raeder care about the navy. Raeder held the highest possible naval
rank and didn't like nazi politics.

That's why he prohibited any kind of political activites by his officers.
Anyone, who disobeyed was fired - even Hitler's naval adjutant.

He refused to fire jewish officers like Backenköhler, Grassmann and Rogge
and when the "Night of Broken Glass" came, high ranking officers like
Dönitz and Lütjens and certainly Raeder sharply protested about that.

When Lütjens went to his first and last mission with the Bismark,
he carried his navy dagger - decorated with symbols of the Kaiser and
not with swastikas.

The high ranking officers shaped the attitude of the german navy. They
hold it pretty much free of politics, made it practically the opposite
to the SS, who consisted of "political soliders".

So talking about "historical revisionism" in this movie is just wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Best war MOVIE ever!   May 13, 2007

Some people rate this movie as the best U-boat/Submarine movie. I heartily agree with this view but in addition, in my opinion, this is also the best war movie ever made. This is kind of hard to explain. Das Boot is a movie that takes you in and involves you with the characters in a way like no other. The anti-war message comes across loud and clear, but in a way that makes sense, not like some perverted director yelling "War is bad, let's just have peace!" Das Boot tells a story of personality, involving fear, terror, compassion and just about every other emotion. This is what makes it such a shocking and compelling story. The Germans are shown exactly as they were, not as some, 'U-571ish' dumbies. During the war Winston Churchill said, "U-boats are those dastardly villians that sink our ships, while submarines are the heroes that sink theirs." Sadly, this view is the result of only seeing the war from one side, a thing a person ought never to do. While I don't disagree with Churchill's statement, I think that he didn't realize that both sides were doing their sworn duty and fighting for their lives, (Or maybe he did and the statement was just Pro-War effort). The realism attained throughout is astounding. You will actually feel like you're in the Kriegsmarine. all these different aspects combine to create a compelling drama that will hold you captive for the entire length. On the technical side, Das Boot's language soundtrack was originally german; I watched it with the lip-synched English and it didn't distract or annoy me in the least. In fact, even when I tried, it was sometimes hard to tell that they were actually speaking German! Big plus. The movie runs a little over three hours, so make sure you have plenty of time before you watch.

My Overall Opinion = Everyone Must See and Believe!

The first side of the DVD is in English, the second side in German. I wasn't aware of this feature when I ordered the DVD.
