Growth of the Shiloh Shepherd in the Dog World August 1, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
As our family searched the web and library books for a dog to replace the two beloved "mutts" who had passed on after a good long life, we stumbled across references to the Shiloh Shepherd.
Without much effort we came across Tina's website as well as some of her licenced breeders. The brains, brawn and beauty of what we saw and read left nothing else but for us to buy the book, and learn as much as we could about the founder of this breed.
Needless to say, the story is motivating, at times heartbreaking, insightful, and a story that had to be told as the struggle to maintain and establish this reputable breed continues.
Critics with personal vendettas or self-ineterest aside, no one can argue that Tina, as Breed Founder, has not always put her blueprint and belief in the proper development and evolution of the Shiloh Shepherd at the top of her lifetime agenda.
This book details the 40+ years she has dedicated to the effort, and now as the proud owner of a Shiloh Shepherd pup that descended from her bloodlines through one of her Canadian breeders, here's hoping Tina (aka Ma Shiloh), and this breed, will eventually get the recognition and credit they deserves from the rest of the Dog World Community.
Truly Amazing! June 30, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is a truly amazing book about a truly amazing breed! I am the proud owner of one of Tina's shilohs. I knew a little of the history of the shilohs in talking with Tina's daughter Lisa, but this book gives an in depth look at the breed and the nature of these dogs. Thank God for people such as Tina for her dedication and persistence concerning this breed. I have owned many dogs over the years and loved each and everyone of them. But my shiloh has been the best one yet. He is highly intellegent and his beauty is beyond compare. He is truly a "gentle giant." Thank you Tina, for caring so much about this breed and writing such a heartwarming book about them!
Inspiring Story June 20, 2007 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I wholeheartedly recommend this book! It was a quick-paced, honest account of a woman's quest to fulfill a dream against many obstacles. Her destiny just happened to be a beautiful, rare-breed dog called the Shiloh Shepherd. Her story is a true inspiration to anyone who has encountered resistance, offering hope that whatever your God-given purpose - stay the course!
FANTASTIC BOOK!!! May 21, 2007 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
What a moving story! The love of dogs by this unbelievable woman shows through so very strongly in this book. I highly reccomend this read because it reflects the determination of human beings as well as the dogs. You can't help but respect this lady and her story about "building a new breed of dog".
If you want the best in a dog breed you must do the best for them regardless of the personal cost March 11, 2007 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I am so impressed with the author Tina Barber for her doing whatever she could to make sure the Shiloh Shepherd Dog is all the original old world German Shepherd was before it became the stream-lined fine-boned dog we see today in breed competitions. I have longed for another dog like my Gretchen who was German Shepherd/Husky. She was heavier than the present Shepherd breed, rather boxy in bone-frame, having a straighter profile than what is now presented at dog shows, and was emotionally stable, and not at all vicious. For 13 years I have been without my companion dog Gretchen but soon, I will have a Shiloh Shepherd puppie that for me embraces all my Gretchen was. I found Tina's website, located a local breeder of the Shiloh Shepherd, visited her dogs and put some money down for a future puppie of a dog named Pica. I then ordered Tina's book, read it through in one day and was more convinced then ever that getting a Shiloh Shepherd puppie is all I had really dreamed for, hoped for and prayed about. Tina, the originating breeder of the Shiloh Shepherd describes how she came to the present Shiloh doing the same fine-tuned work others have done in the past to have a dog that will be all it was meant to be from generation to generation for that breed. Others have joined her, followed her expertise in breeding Shilohs so that they and others can enjoy what is considered by many to be not only a beautiful dog to look at but one that possesses all the important stuff of the Shepherd herding dog from the beginning of the breeds inception. We have all seen many 'New Breeds' in AKC dog shows, and I feel after reading Tina's book that the Shiloh will one day be a newly accepted breed you will see in the future. We do not know all that it took to get a new breed to the place where they were recognized as a definate breed apart from all others, and definately not of the mongrel type. This is one book that describes the difficult process. In her book Tina describes her journey to do just that with the Shiloh Shepherd and spans over 30 years to the present. Tina's passion to breed the right dog that everyone can not only enjoy but also be fully confident in all the fine qualities this breed possesses is described in detail. It was not an easy journey. Because of her careful and precise attention to every detail I know that I will get a Shiloh that is exactly what Tina says she will be in every way. Especially that she will be medically, and emotionally sound and that she will be a joy to have as part of my family and my community. Thank you Tina for all you have done for all concerned, and for how you have really paid your dues above and beyond to bring the Shiloh Shepherd to this point. I will be forever indebted to you for all you have done and for how you have sacrificed that this beautiful breed can be on this planet for everyone to enjoy.I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in dogs in general or for those wanting to know more what the Shiloh Shepherd breed and it's founder Tina is all about.
