Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
This book covers training methods developed in 25 years of working with students at the Tom Rose School. It is essential for anyone working in Schutzhund (Versatility Dog). It also covers puppy imprinting, obedience, tracking, and selecting a working dog. Important principles covered include loading, minimizing stress on the dog, and understanding what training is best for the individual handler/dog team. From the obedience chapter: Have you ever watched a trainer come to a halt in a trial and the dog fails to sit? As a judge I see this all too frequently. Do you really think the dog forgot? After judging many dogs and training professionally for over 30 years, I believe this often results from avoidance. I observed that worried dogs were far more likely to forget to sit. Guess what many of these trainers say they plan to do to fix the problems? You guessed it Make harder and more frequent corrections. Does that work? No! It will just create more problems. From the puppy chapter: Starting training at an early age is important to your dogs eventual success. The first few weeks you have your puppy are probably the most important period in his life. Dont waste them. Use these weeks well! Plan them in advance, have your program laid out, develop a schedule and stick with it. About the authors: Tom Rose is recognized internationally as a licensed trial judge, author, competitor, and teacher. He teaches his innovative methods training for obedience, tracking, protection, and specific scent detection to student professional trainers from all over the world at his school in Missouri. Annetta Cheek is an accomplished trainer and licensed obedience judge. She has trained and shown her dogs with great success in obedience and agility, as well as in Schutzhund. Dr. Cheeks writing skills make this book one of the clearest training books youll find.
