Geared towards agility and conformation participants March 22, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
While this book claims to be for the average dog owner who is interested in having a better relationship with his/her dog and use positive techniques for training and behavior mod, I really felt that it was geared strongly towards participants in obedience and agility competitions.
If you are interested in either of these things, then this book is GREAT for taking your relationship with your dog in a new direction. And, it's all about positive reinforcement, which is awesome...b/c it's so nice to reward them for the good stuff.
Build a Better Relationship with your dog and win February 21, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Have a dog that is reactive? Have a dog that doesn't pay attention when you need? Leslie helps you build a better relationship with your dog that includes teaching your dog how to focus and be confident.
The book is laid out as if you were taking a class with Leslie over a seven night course. Leslie breaks things down so that it all works in real life and real dogs.
A must have for owners of reactive dogs! Yes, many people are going to look at this as a way to solve their agility problems, hopefully what they learn is a better relationship with their dog.
We really enjoyed Leslie's visit in November 2007 at CSDogBookReview, check out our archives of her visit. I was also fortunate to see Leslie in action locally for a CU seminar.
need an editor! now December 6, 2007 5 out of 31 found this review helpful
I have worked dogs for twenty years, I have over 100 ribbons from agility, ADCH, TM etc ,read a lot of dog books, writer is doing a lot of nice "new" work, but the book needed a hard edit/different vision for it to be a work book.
The foundation of good agility is strong obediance skills! And a happy working dog! This is overlooked again and again. And a calm dog that trusts you ! I grew tired of classes of agility wannabees with untrained, nasty, or shy , or poorly trained dogs being asked to do college level work. ...so buy this before you start agility, practice, and make your instructor happy with a calm dog. Yes, we (trainers) have over stressed pet agility dogs and owners! Helloo, wake up, calm dogs are all we need for most pet owners to be happy at agility. Not Nancy Gyese's Riot! This book helps with getting a calm normal dog, it is not really for reactive, "variation from normal dogs". (That means really mean , nasty dogs... which all trainers see, but few can deal with.... and do not belong at agility...) Nice book, hang on , will be better written in a year at the most.... I keep reading my copy trying to find some meat behond an idea or two .. tired of fluffy stories!
A Must For Your Dog Book Library October 26, 2007 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
Although Leslie's CU class was born of the need of agility instructors to have dogs in their classes that could cope with the excitement level of that sport and stay within their threshold so they could learn, this book os an absolute must for anyone involved with dogs. It is a reactive dog manual, a puppy primer, a shelter dog guide. It is a book that should be basic library material for all dog clubs, and anyone who is involved with dogs, whether it be dog sports participants, pet people or any other dog people. Leslie gives you basic exercises which would help settle in any dog. She has taken time from her life to write this book, present seminars, help people and moderate and answer questions on the Yahoo! group of her creation. Thank you Leslie from me and my dogs, Riley and Tater. I will see you in Elburn in May of 2008!!!
Wonderful book October 21, 2007 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
The best training book I've ever read. It's written for handlers with reactive or excitable dogs and for agility professionals as well. McDevitt shows how handlers can help their dogs relax and focus so that it's possible to learn and so that teamwork is possible and fun for the dogs and for their people. Her book is full of love for dogs as the amazing creatures they are. A beautiful spirit, combined with lots of extremely useful and practical ideas.
