Product Description
Presenting the Great, New Third Edition of the Most Respected Book in Print on the German Shepherd in the English Language. From the time Captain Max von Stephanitz undertook the development of the modern German Shepherd just before the turn of the 20th Century to the present, dog enthusiasts have been quick to recognize the versatility, trainability, and desirability of the universally beloved Shepherd and have taken the breed to their collective heart.

Since 1974 The German Shepherd Today has been recognized as the most definitive source of information for all who glory in von Stephanitz's living legacy. Now, in its third magnificent edition, this great masterwork is more meaningful than ever to the unique fellowship that has the German Shepherd as its common bond. Here you can explore the German Shepherd's roots and the work of the visionaries that launched his fortunes. There is vital information all owners, new or old, need to make the most of sharing their lives with these remarkable dogs. For whatever reason you have been drawn to the German Shepherd and for whatever information needs you have regarding the breed and your relationship to it, you will find all you seek-and more-in the new third edition of The German Shepherd Today. And with the text Shepherd fans recommend to each other, is a large gallery of beautiful photos, enlightening diagrams, pedigrees, and statistics you will find as absorbing as the dog you call your own. The best one remains on top.

4 out of 5 stars Fair but not very deep information on training   April 8, 2008
The German shepherd Today, gives fairly enough about the breed and taking care of your puppy or mature dog and some information on training your dog. But nearly half of the book gives the names of the competition winner dogs or heritages of them. I have a 4,5 months old German Shepherd puppy and after finished reading the book I found myself many questions about caring or training my dog. I guess I should also buy the author's other book Expert Obedience Training for Dogs, Fourth Edition

3 out of 5 stars A good second book.   February 23, 2003

Ms. Strickland covers almost everything except an important facet; The disparity and perhaps controversy between the american and german types of the breed.

I enjoyed this book immensely! She, once again, touches on all the aspects of training, caring for, maintaining a strong bond with your dog, list goes on. I didn't give 5 stars only because there were so many pages of champions.

4 out of 5 stars If you own a shepherd , this book is for you   September 19, 2001

This book is without a doubt the best german shepherd dog book on the market today. It has a little something for everybody in it. History, training tips, pictures, its got it all. I especially like her inclusion of German dog show information. If there is anything that you need to know about this breed, it is definately in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Read the rest but buy this one!   April 23, 2001

This is an excellent book recommended to me by my dogs breeder. I have read just about all of the GSD books written in the English language (available in my country) and this one is the most complete. She is good at discussing the differences between the German lines and American lines in such a way to be very non biased! Amazing... did not think it could be done. It walks you through the basics right through the more complex aspects of the German Shepherd world. Good stuff! Not just a must read but a must own!!
