Pet Therapy as a Tool to Reach Out in Love February 16, 2007 S. Grande (New York, NY USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is an excellent manual in the use of animals, especially dogs in a therapeutic setting. It is a compilation of essays from those working in the field. Most if not all have case studies and have done their own research on the effectiveness of this type of therapy. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in going into this type of "work". It is presented as a work of the heart, from both the owners' and animals' perspective.

Professional Pet Assisted Therapy March 18, 2005 Claire J. Senecal (Woonsocket, RI USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
The author, Pearl Salotto, has written a book on the profession of pet assisted therapy that is not only comprehensive but also warm, loving, and compassionate. Anyone interested in the human/companion animal bond in general and pet assisted therapy in particular will greatly benefit from her knowledge and experience in this field. Included in Pearl's book are articles and chapters on pet assisted therapy programs with numerous populations such as people who are elderly, people with developmental disabilities, people with mental illness, and people in hospitals and nursing homes. Of particular interest are Pearl's "Respect for Living Things" programs for children. This book opens the reader's minds up to the numerous ways that our wonderful family therapy pets bring smiles, joy, life lessons, and healing to participants who are young and old alike. This is a book that you will want to read and have on your shelves as a reference for many years to come
Inspiring and enlightening! March 18, 2005 Linda P. Jones 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I had the unique experience of working with Pearl and later contributing a piece to this book. My students and I read many of the articles before they were published. At the time I was an English teacher and Service-Learning Coordinator at an urban high school. Pearl and I created a course for the students using her book as the text. They were engaged in many service-learning experiences through Pet Assisted Therapy (PAT). These included nursing homes, day cares, literacy centers, elementary schools to name a few. My students learned how different careers can incorporate PAT (social work, occupational therapy, nursing, psychology etc). Over the years I have come to realize the importance of the professional PAT in today's society. I have watched new PAT programs evolve through Pearl's course at CCRI, as well as, throughout the world. This book has inspired and enlightened many readers young and old!
A Great Learning Tool for the Field of Pet Assisted Therapy March 17, 2005 D. Calo (Greenville, RI) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I read this book as part of my certificate course for Pet Assisted Therapy. It contains a lot of important material for a new person entering the profession. It helps you understand what community of people you would like to work with; school children, individuals who are elderly. individuals with disabilities. You can look up other faciliatator's programs and see what their animals are accomplishing. You are shown how to write a proposal for a facility that you are interested in working at with your animal. It contains stories about the animals working in this new profession that are heart warming. Stories about D.J., who inspired the book, and other dogs and cats, horses and even a Brahma Bull. If you are going into this field as a professional or as a student intern, this book is a must have in your library. diane
