Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com
Because it was released less than a year after Oliver Stone's Platoon and within months of Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, this exceptionally well-made film about one of the bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War was largely overshadowed and overlooked. It's a pity, because in some respects this is the best of the Vietnam films of the late 1980s, at least in terms of the everyday authenticity it depicts. Stripped clean of dramatically extraneous narrative, the movie opts instead for a straightforward approach to its day-by-day account of one of the war's costliest victories--a deadly siege on Hill 937 in the Ashau Valley, where soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division engaged the enemy over the course of eleven brutal assaults between May 10th and 20th, 1969. The film specifically follows the 3rd Squad, 1st Platoon, a mixture of "new guys" and battle-weary "short-timers" who fought against terrifying odds and suffered a 70% casualty rate. From first scene to last, Hamburger Hill traces the rise and fall of their battle experience, from the horror of firefights to the camaraderie of men who've faced death and survived. Racial tensions flare and subside, trusts are established, and courage emerges from unexpected places. Through it all, writer Jim Carabatsos and director John Irvin maintain a purity of focus that pays tribute to the soldier's life without promoting false patriotism or gung-ho theatrics. In addition, the film features a cast full of talented and well-known actors in the early stages of their careers, including Dylan McDermott (from the TV series "The Practice") and Don Cheadle, before gaining fame in Devil in a Blue Dress and Boogie Nights. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Don't mean nothing   January 16, 2008

Hamburger Hill DVD

Based on my experiences, Hamburger Hill is the most realistic Viet Nam war movie that I've seen.
I was with the 25th Infantry Division in III Corps from July, 1969 to June, 1970. As I understand it the 101st airborne Division (or the "Pukin Buzzards" as the 25th called them) was to our immediate North. The few things that were not realistic were:
- I never saw a hot tub,
- We never deployed a platoon by itself, minimum Company strength.i.e. At least three [platoons.

The movie's anti-war message is apparent from the opening credits, which are interspersed with views of the Capitol and the Vietnam Memorial in Washington. The symbolism of our seat of government juxtaposed with the memorial to the fallen is heightened by the wintry sunset reflecting off the Vietnam Memorial.
Rather than a history lesson, the movie is a metaphor for the war in Vietnam: the relentless push to achieve ground of questionable importance despite the high cost in blood. Good men fought and died.
Was it worth it? As the fatalistic mantra among the grunts in the movie said, "It don't mean nothin'." That's a sad, angering attitude until you recall that shortly after the battle was over, we left the hill, as we did

Highly recommended for those who want a realistic picture of the Viet Nam war

3 out of 5 stars GQ Magazine on Film   November 12, 2007

I wouldn't dream of arguing with veterans who see this film as realistic. I defer to their authority and expertise absolutely. What strikes me about this picture, though, is the rather unrealistic depiction of males as shown in the picture. My sense of demographic sampling suggests that it would be highly unlikely to find such unusually handsome fellas in the same place and time, anywhere but in Venice, California on muscle beach or maybe in a gay bar on Santa Monica Boulevard on Saturday night. With their chiseled cheeks and cleft chins, these guys are just not what I would expect to find lying on their backs, working on a broken down Jeep in a war zone. I wasn't there, but I'd wager that central casting worked hard to assemble this cast of fashion models. All power to them, mind you, my point simply being that "reality" is what what comes to my mind when I see films like this.
