Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
When a simple case turns into a treacherous and politically charged investigation, Spenser faces his most difficult challenge yet-keeping his cool while his beloved Susan Silverman is in danger.

Spenser knows something's amiss the moment Dennis Doherty walks into his office. The guy's aggressive yet wary, in the way men frightened for their marriages always are. So when Doherty asks Spenser to investigate his wife Jordan's abnormal behavior, Spenser agrees. A job's a job, after all.

Not surprisingly, Spenser catches Jordan with another man, tells Dennis what he's found out, and considers the case closed. But a couple of days later, all hell breaks loose, and three people are dead. This isn't just a marital affair gone bad. Spenser is in the middle of hornet's nest of trouble, and he's got to get out of it without getting stung. With Hawk watching his back, and gun-for- hire Vinnie Morris providing extra cover, Spenser delves into a complicated and far-reaching operation: Jordan's former lover, Perry Alderson, is the leader of a group that helps sponsor terrorists. But Perry doesn't like Spenser poking around his business, so he decides to get to Spenser through Susan. The Boston P.I. will use all his connections both above and below the law to uncover the truth behind Perry's antigovernment organization. But what Alderson doesn't realize is that Spenser will stop at absolutely nothing to keep Susan out of harm's way; nothing will keep him from the woman he loves.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific read...   June 27, 2008
I've been reading Parker for a long time, and it's great to see him back at the top of his form again. Even when the book is not great, Spenser is always fun. And this book shows our favorite PI at his best. Wisecracking with cops and bad guys, flirting with beautiful women, and, of course, being the ultimate tough guy when he has to go into action. I liked the story too, which kept me guessing and had a lot of depth to it. I read this book in a day, which is really the way to read Parker. Great fun...

4 out of 5 stars A notch above some of the more recent series' efforts...   May 27, 2008
This is typical Spenser for Mr. Parker, this time featuring Susan more than usual, and lots of references to the most troubled time in their romantic relationship, a bad patch of 20 years ago. This held my interest all the way. Hawk and Vinnie are hanging about, and they are always fun. The bad guy is a lefty radical who may or may not have fabricated his '60's counter-culture credentials. One enjoys his comeuppance, even though one might back in the day, have admired him. I get my Parker from the library, because if no one borrows his books, libraries stop purchasing them. And also because $20 for a three-hour read is not sensible on my budget. And I still like Spenser and his friends and Parker's way with dialogue. This series, about 30 books long, showed some fatigue over the past decade, but "Now and Then" is a rally.

Classic Parker - you just can't get enough of these detective stories! Gotta love Hawk and the old fashioned chivalry.

2 out of 5 stars Parker on Cruise Control   March 28, 2008

Is this a bad Spenser Novel? No. Is this a good Spenser novel? No. This is Robert B. Parker cruising through a slight story filled with 3 page chapters and recycled wit. It all feels familiar as Spenser and Susan continue to be in never ending lust and everyone talks like a tough guy out of a Bogart movie. Listen, when you pick up a Spenser book you know what your getting but I guess after 37(!) of these things I'm getting as bored reading them as Parker seems to be in writing them.

3 out of 5 stars Same O Same O   March 28, 2008

Another entry from RBP... and a cookie-cutter mystery formula. Its getting so if you've read one... you've read them all. Nothing much changes... just the names of the extra characters. Its an interesting story, but horridly predictible... right down to the dialog.
If you're unsure, wait for the paperback.
Its cheaper.
