Product Description
CRACKER IS ONE OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY'S MOST VALUABLE WEAPONS: a German shepherd trained to sniff out bombs, traps, and the enemy. The fate of entire platoons rests on her keen sense of smell. She's a Big Deal, and she likes it that way. Sometimes Cracker remembers when she was younger, and her previous owner would feed her hot dogs and let her sleep in his bed. That was nice, too. Rick Hanski is headed to Vietnam. There, he's going to whip the world and prove to his family and his sergeant -- and everyone else who didn't think he was cut out for war -- wrong. But sometimes Rick can't help but wonder that maybe everyone else is right. Maybe he should have just stayed at home and worked in his dad's hardware store. When Cracker is paired with Rick, she isn't so sure about this new owner. He's going to have to prove himself to her before she's going to prove herself to him. They need to be friends before they can be a team, and they have to be a team if they want to get home alive. Told in part through the uncanny point of view of a German shepherd, Cracker! is an action-packed glimpse into the Vietnam War as seen through the eyes of a dog and her handler. It's an utterly unique powerhouse of a book by the Newbery Medal-winning author of Kira-Kira.

Cracker!! March 12, 2010 Logan Cracker! By Cynthia Kadohata is an inspiring book about a dog who goes to war in Vietnam after being taken from his young owner when his landlord makes him get rid of him. This book has been an inspiration to many and the plot is gripping and fun it will make you laugh and make you cry. I would especially recommend this book if you are an animal lover or are interested in wars.
"Cracker is the best dog in Vietnam." With Kadohata's great writing the reader gets in to the story and gets to know the characters and the dog very well. You get close to the dog and you don't want anything to happen. In the end it is a very sad story so if you don't enjoy reading sad books this would not be the best book for you to read. The authors writing style makes you fall in love with the book in the first few chapters. This is a book that is hard to put down.
The main characters in this book are a dog and his handler. They are an inspiring pair and they are so interesting to read about. The dog will affect you in many ways and you can relate if you have ever had to give up your dog. The emotion in the scene where the dog leaves is very well described. "Willie looked up at the third-floor window where he always saw Cracker waiting for him. He gasped when he saw that Cracker wasn't there. That mish mean they'd already taken her. She had ESP so she always knew when he was coming home, even when he was early. He started to trot..........Willie called out to the closed window: `Cracker! Cra-a-a-acker!' She didn't appear, and Willie broke into a sprint.
This tearjerker of a book will break your heart but still at moments make you laugh. The adventure and thrill included in this book make it a must read. When I read this book I could barely put it down the emotions run wild when you read this book. The characters become so important to you and the story is inspiring to you.
This book will appeal to all ages and genders because the plot includes war and such which is appealing to boys and the animal aspect of the plot will appeal to girls. It will appeal to all ages because it is a great story and I think that it has many lessons and older people were more involved in the Vietnam war and they would be more interested in this particular topic.
I would definitely recommend this book to someone. I would give it at least 4 and ½ stars. The writing is amazing and inspiring to all and the plot is gripping and adventurous at the same, which makes for a great read!
This author is amazing and has been a large inspiration to me through her previous books but until I read Cracker! I had no idea what a great author she could be. This book is especially appealing to me because of my love of dogs. I loved getting the chance to read a book that was about a dog. This was a great book and if you are ever looking for a great read you should pick up this amazing gripping tale of a soldier and his dog.
Best Book Ever! January 8, 2010 Sever Family (Ohio) My 9 year old daughter found this book in her school library and brought it home to read. She would not put it down. We're on Amazon right now writing this review becasue we are buying our own copy.
In my daughter's words: The story was action packed. There was always so much going on and something to look forward to. It made you want to read "just one more page". The story goes back and forth between Rick and Cracker which makes it interesting. This is a great book for anyone! I can't wait to have my own copy and read it again!
Truly amazing December 23, 2009 I love this book. I would recomend it to anyone who is interested in dogs and the Vietnom war. It is truly amazing to read.
A Moving story from an Unsung Hero's point of view December 5, 2009 M. Beardsley (West KY, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you love dogs, and especially if you love German Shephers, then this book is for you! It is a very moving book written from the dog's point of view. Yeah I know this sound hoaky, but it really is good. Being a dog lover and especially a German Shepherd lover/owner, I can tell you, the way the author describes what "Cracker" the German Shepherd is thinkings/feeling really seems plausable. The fact is over 11,000 specially trained dogs went to Vietnam to aid our service men during the war, all but 200 of them were left behind, some in their kennels, some tied to trees, post or whatever, and either starved to death or were tortured and killed by the North Vietnamese, who hated these dogs for their role in aiding our men over there. The dog's handlers' pleaded with the Pentagon to allow them to bring the dogs home, but they wouldn't do it... they were expendable and treated like so much discarded equipment. To this day, if you talk to some of the handlers of those dogs, they will break down in tears about the thought of leaving their partner behind. Thousands of military personnel owe their lives to these wonderful, brave and loving dogs, and their reward for this was for all but a handful, starvation, torture and death! It breaks my heart to think about this, and it makes me furious to know that we did this. I love our military, but whoever make the decision to leave those dogs behind, should have been shot! Sorry, back to the book, if you love dogs, get this book, I think you will truly enjoy it.
