An excellent book for the working and Euro-line GSD lover. March 7, 1998 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Of the 16 GSD books that I have read, this is the best overall book for the Euro-bred working line GSD. It covers all but seeing-eye work of which the GSD is capable. From looking for a breeder, reading a German pedigree, bringing home the pup, feeding, general training, structure, kennel building, choosing a mate and breeding; the authors have presented the complete life of a healthy GSD. If this book is too difficult to find, a second choice is -The German Shepherd Dog- by Ernest H. Hart. This second book is a bit more up to date on some health and feeding issues. I still see -This is the German Shepherd- as the treasure of my library. It is also important to note the pictures in this book show GSDs with strong backs, only slightly sloped as they should be, rather than the GSDs of the current show rings (both American and unfortunately German) who are almost dragging their behinds. The discussion in the standard, about the top line, page 252 section b says it all. I am happy there is a book that is not affraid to discuss Schutzhund training and goes so far as to list SchH titles after the names of those dogs who have earned them.
