Product Description Something Borrowed meets Must Love Dogs in this big- hearted debut about friendship, love, and a German Shepherd named Joe.
Savannah "Van" Leone has been in love with Peter Clarke ever since she literally fell head over heels in front of him on the first day of college. Now, six years later, instead of standing across from him at the altar, Van's standing behind her best friend Janie as maid of honor, trying to mask her heartache and guilt as Janie marries the only man Van's ever loved. Before, Van's mother died, she told Van never to let Peter go, but as the couple exchanges vows, Van wonders if her fairy tale ending will ever come true.
After the wedding, Van drowns her sorrows in Kool-Aid-vodka cocktails and reruns of Rin Tin Tin, and does what any heartbroken woman in her situation would do: She impulsively buys a German Shepherd over the Internet. The pocket-size puppy Van is expecting turns out to be a clumsy, hundred-pound beast who only responds to commands in Slovak, and Van is at the end of her rope... until she realizes that this quirky giant may be the only living being who will always be loyal to her, no matter what.
Van affectionately names her dog Joe, and together, they work to mend the pieces of Van's shattered heart. And it certainly doesn't hurt that Joe's vet is a rugged sweetheart with floppy blond hair and a winning smile. But when the newlyweds return from their honeymoon, Van is forced to decide just how much she's willing to sacrifice in order to have everything she ever wanted, proving that sometimes life needs to get more complicated before it can get better.
Warm and witty, poignant and funny, Stay is an unforgettable debut that illuminates the boundlessness of love and marks the arrival of an irresistible new voice.

Stay August 24, 2010 Melissa A. Palmer Van (Savannah) has long been in love with her best friend Peter. She didn't plan for him to fall in love with her best friend, Janie. The book opens with Van being Janie's maid of honor and trying to deal with residual feelings for Peter. To help her get over him, Van orders a German Shepard puppy over the internet. Once Joe, a huge puppy, arrives, Van's life is no longer lonely. Joe's hunky vet, Alex, is just a nice benefit. Good romance with good characters, I enjoyed this book a lot. I borrowed it from my library.

Woof! August 22, 2010 S. Nelson (florida) This was an enjoyable read and a quick one! The character is a that perfect flawed person that we can all relate to. Her dog is one that we all wish we had. The guy is the guy we all wished we would meet. I hope the author writes more enjoyable books to follow!
Stay August 12, 2010 Jenni French I am a cat person, not a dog person, so I am not sure what initially attracted me to this book. Perhaps all this time staying in the house of two dog lovers has convinced me that dogs are worth the barking, the walks, the pooper scoopers, and the drool. Maybe.
In any case, this is a cute story. The main character, Van, falls apart after her best friend married Van had loved since the day she met him. In the middle of the night, after watching a marathon of Rin Tin Tin, she orders a dog online. She expect a cute, tiny puppy. What she got was a very large puppy who only responded to commands in Slovak.
The rest of the story is fairly predictable. She takes the overlarge puppy to the vet, discovers that the vet is a handsome single man, you get the picture. But it's a cute story, and it actually held my interest past the time I spent at the laundromat. Apart from the profanity spoken by angry or drunk characters, the story itself was enjoyable. This book would be a good airplane or beach read.
Joe The Dog August 10, 2010 Ethelyn Fitch I would like the story to be more of the dog, not about her love affairs.
I bought the book thinking that it would be more about Joe, I was very dsappointed.
A Romantic Tale with a Fluffy Tail July 24, 2010 K Sprite 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book reads a lot like the puppy who's on the cover. It's sweet, innocent and adorable. I was smiling much of the way through it because it was fun to read those goofy giddy romantic moments between the main character and her love interest. Those were my favorite parts; they had the right amount of young vibrancy and sweetness to feel good about.
However, if you are expecting any dramatic plot turns or profound insights from the characters, you are not going to find it here. It's a sweet, yet extremely predictable romantic comedy that if were a movie would perhaps star Meg Ryan (in her younger days), Julia Roberts, or Amy Adams. The main character didn't transform in ways that were particularly surprising or meaningful. She did learn how to stand up for herself and listen to her own needs rather than others, but the way she did that was not very nuanced or mature. Usually, standing up for herself meant blurting out swear words and hiding for a bit until the other characters apologized to her. Ultimately, I found the characters and the story all too cutesy and contrived.
I did enjoy reading most of this book. It was fun and made me smile for a lot of it. It wasn't until 3/4 through that I realized that the characters or plot wouldn't mature in ways that differ from anything you would find in a sit-com, and I began to get annoyed with the cutesy style of the writing. So if you are looking for a book that will really stay with you that you think about long afterward, perhaps this isn't the one. But if you are looking for a quick fun read that's light and refreshing, and you're a big fan of chick-lit, then you will most likely enjoy this book.
